Warner Bros. Hybrid HD Disk Will Circumvent The Format Wars

Sony and Toshiba have been duking it out in the format wars for some time now. Who will reign victorious, Blu-ray disk or HD-DVD? It’s a risky move for the consumer to purchase either player, not knowing which will survive. What will be the next DVD format?
Time Warner and its Hollywood subsidiary Warner Bros plan on releasing their film and television libraries on a hybrid disk called the Total HD disc. Total HD disks will play on both Blu-ray machines and HD-DVD machines. Warner executive Barry M. Meyer, commented in an interview:
The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer. We felt that the most significant constituency for us to satisfy was the consumer first, and the retailer second. The retailer wants to sell hardware and doesn’t want to be forced into stocking two formats for everything. This is ideal for them.
Hybrid disks sound like a flexible answer to the battle over hardware. With two separate formats being backed by two different companies, media libraries will be split. Will consumers have to make their decision on high definition player in accordance to who makes better movies on their specific format?

How about none of those and we stick with DVDs? VHS lasted for 30+ years. DVD is 10-15 years old…i dont want a new damned format.
The combo discs that are HD-DVD and DVD cost 30 bucks, I can only imagine what these’ll be.
Who knows if Sony and Toshiba won’t put a stop to it. The longer the war goes on, the worse for everyone
Yeah, I’m fine with plain old DVDs too, even on the HD sets the rest of my family now have. (Note: the Wii looks great on them too.)
When one or the other format becomes ubiquitous and we can get a player for $68 at Wally World and they have big clearance sections of $10 HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray discs, then maybe I’ll care about the improved resolution.
