Wii Gets Original Downloadable Titles, Maybe 'Game Channel' Too?

Speaking with Game Informer, Hudson Entertainment marketing director John Lee set off a minor rumor frenzy that has Wii gamers drooling over the prospect of a possible "Game Channel" that serves up original downloadable titles to the Wii. Lee said nothing so straightforward as all that, but he did note that Nintendo is working on plans to distribute original downloadable games. When asked if Hudson Entertainment had plans to distribute original games for download onto the Wii, he slyly answered:
"No... However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: 'Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii,' and you might get a different answer."
In corporate land you're not allowed to be clever without written permission, right? CVG mentioned Lee's implications to Nintendo, and they responded with relative candor:
"We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."
If Nintendo did launch a separate channel it might be to draw a clear line between old-school Virtual Console titles on the one hand and newer, perhaps more XBLA-worthy original games on the other. If the Wii can master two distinct breeds of downloadable games in addition to its evolving physical game library, that would give it a surprise lead against the infrastructure- and technology-heavy competition over at Xbox Live as well as whatever burgeoning design Sony has up their sleeve.

The only thing I have to say is, be prepared to invest in lots of SD cards.
This cannot happen soon enough. This will be a great way for developers of all sizes to dip their toes in the Wii pool.
...Wii pool...ew...
I like SD cards and Wii :D
