Wii Play With Ourselves

Since getting my Wii a week ago, I have fallen in love with the system. It is cute and friendly, and the satisfying blips it makes when clicking on big round buttons with the word “Wii” emblazoned on them fill me with inner peace, a happy comforting feeling that I must admit, worries me slightly. A game system should not make one feel safe from harm, soothed, complete!

And yet, it does. I won’t even get into the squeals of joy I utter while playing Twilight Princess. Something about the new experience of this machine, the little rumbles it threads through your fingers as you interact as you never have before. Well, its just magical. Go ahead, brand me as a hopeless Nintendo fanboy. I dare you.

Just try to resist the fun coursing through this gameplay footage of Wii Play, set to come out in February. I’ve been searching for a second wiimote to play something other than bowling and golf in my two player stints, and this game comes with a remote, although minus the nunchuk. After trading in my Gamecube for some cold hard cash, I was all prepared to spend it as soon as I found a remote, but now I think I’ll wait for this little party in a box. Although I hope it’s not as difficult to get a hold of as everything else seems to be for the system.

I swear it won’t make hair grow on your palms.

Wahhh! I still don’t have one.

Were you on a preorder list and your number finally came up? Or did you stalk one down somewhere out in the wild?

Wiimotes, nunchucks, and classic controllers are no where to be found where I live! But from how much fun my friends had making Miis and playing Wii Sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids,I’m going to have to fight for this game (and the remote)

yeah, i’ve searched high and low for wiimotes, as well. such is life. i don’t really like other people touching my wii anyway. not that one, at least (yuk yuk oh brother).

this game looks kinda fun, but I think Wario Ware Smooth Moves looks ALOT more fun, and there are alot more minigames that these. (and don’t hate me for this) but if i get this game what am I going to do with a 5th wii remote??

Eh. See, this is what turns me off about the Wii. These little games are no different from a thousand other free internet Flash games, except it’s controlled with the Wiimote. Once the novelty of the controls wears off, it’ll be flat boring.

Richie, unless you’ve actually played any of these games, I wouldn’t be so quick to judge, or to write them off as a “novelty” (which is what was said about the DS’s touch screen, 2 years ago). I assure you playing the Wii is in no way like playing online Flash games. As someone who programs Flash games, trust me. The Wii is something special, and something very different.

Spaz: I’ve played Wii Sports. I think Bowling made great use of the Wiimote because it responded to the nuances of your movement. But the other sports could have just as easily been controlled with an analog stick and a couple buttons. (Golf could be an exception, though. I haven’t tried that one.)

Obviously I haven’t played Wii Play, so what I should have said in my first comment was, “These games LOOK no different…”

I’m not saying the Wii is crap or anything. I’m saying I’m hoping for more software that takes full advantage of the hardware.

Sure, Tennis or Baseball COULD have been controlled with an analog stick and a couple buttons…. but they’re not. They are controlled by swinging what looks like a TV remote in a way that feels a lot like playing the real sport. A way that makes people play together and laugh out loud, and puts color in their faces. A way that tempts 96-year-old women who have never touched a game pad or mouse to “play a game on the TV” with their 7 year old great-granddaughters.

And that is why a lot of hardcore gamers will never understand the Wii, and why non-gamers dig it so much. Sure, when you’re by yourself it’s just a slightly more immersive standard videogame.
Add in other people and suddenly it’s something more than a videogame, more than even the “party game” kind of vibe you could get from DDR or Eyetoy.

I don’t know if Wii Play or Wario Ware will be able to keep the joy going for non-gamers, but I sure am looking forward to playing them with my friends and family.

IT’S SUCH A DIFFERENT SYSTEM THAN THE PS3 AND XBOX360. THIS YEARS E3 SHOULD TELL US A LOT MORE THAN THE LAST 4TH QTR.

just remember that wii play is virtualy a free game with a spare wiimote so dont expect much.

its been available over here since launch and whilst its sold out everywhere it isnt because of the games.

a couple of the games are decent fun but mostly they are pretty poor and the whole package is more of a wiimote training manual than a set of party games like wii sports

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
