Woman Dies Trying To Win A Wii

Apparently, this weekend, a woman named Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead in her Rancho Cordova home after trying her hand in a radio contest that involved holding in her pee in an attempt to win a Wii. KDND 107.9 promised a Wii system to the winner of their contest, “Hold Your Wee for a Wii,” in which Strange entered in an attempt to win the console for her children.
This kind of freaked me out, but apparently one can die from drinking too much water. Water intoxication, as it is called, occurs when the body has so much water that cells lose their stability and start to rupture. Which, you can imagine, is a bad thing when it starts to happen in the central nervous system.
Contestants were given 8 ounce bottles of water, and as the contest went on, larger sizes. It is unclear what went on after most people dropped out. Did Jennifer Strange win? Did they send people home and wait for someone to admit peeing, or did each contestant have someone follow them around waiting for the golden shower?
Either way, after going home complaining of head pain and crying, she was found dead. The media will probably try to hold this up as proof of the dangerous, killing potential of the Wii, but it just makes me angry at the radio station for coming up with such a obviously unresearched, dangerous contest. I hope her kids got that Wii.

Water intoxication also kills in that it essentailly messes up the osmosis function of cells, which is how minerals, salts, and other chemicals move in and out of cells. Too much water in the body, the cells loose their ions to help maintain a balance but the cells then die because it looses all of their ions and cannot function.
And this mom is not the first to die from water intoxication. Many frat initiations go wrong by having pledges drink too much water.
who wants to get into all that sciency stuff? :P
a lot of kids die from it while on ecstasy too.
This is so terrible. She does it for her kids and dies as a result. Those poor kids are going to hate Nintendo. I foresee a wrongful death lawsuit against that radio station.
She did not win ...if she’d had some salt with the water, or other source of electrolytes, or if they’d used Gatorade instead, she might still be alive.
I love the radio station’s excuse that they told people to stop if they felt they couldn’t take it anymore. Just think of what the contest might have entailed had the PS3 been harder to come by.
“Put a Plastic Sack over your head to win a PS3! But if you pass out, make sure you take it off first!”
If I’d be a parent I’d want my kids to have a Nintendo too if they’d do well in school etc, but holding your pee until the point of death for $250?? What happened to doing some tricks to buy that wii for the kids?
Yeah, those kids are SOOOO guilt tripping right now. They are going to need some serious therapy. Their want killed their mom.
