Xbox 360 Dominated Christmas Market

The numbers are in, the data’s been tallied, the votes for Pat Buchanan have been disregarded, and the results are now in. According to NPD, Microsoft was the undisputed champion when it came to holiday console sales this year with approximately 2 million units sold between November and Christmas. Nintendo did almost as well with the Wii, which sold roughly 1.8 million units (but remember that the Wii didn’t launch until November 19).
Now, I know what your next question is: “How’d Sony do?” Well… not so good, as it turns out, but this was mainly due to a lack of supplies in general rather than losing a popularity contest.
Stock shortages were an even bigger problem for Sony. Around 750,000 PlayStation 3 units were sold during the same period.
I gotta admit, that number is way higher than what I expected after the incredibly problematic PS3 launch. What I’d really like to know is how many 60 gig PS3s were sold over the 20 gig ones.

I really don’t think numbers matter as much as the reality. The Wii was completely sold out the entire Christmas season, which probably in turn boosted 360 sales.
Numbers are the reality. What you’re talking about there is speculation. There’s no way to prove your theory.
Head on over to the magic box to see the Japanese numbers.
Theoretically the 360 could have seen a nice jump there, as Famitsu rated Blue Dragon very highly and Microsoft did the right thing with a BD bundle.
The reality is that Japan didn’t bite. Lord only knows why, other than actually having Final Fantasy, this was the best chunk of cheese I could think of.
Incidentally, this article is just about the new big 3. The numbers I have for November show the GBA outselling the 360, the PS2 topping that, and the DS selling almost a whopping twice as many as the 360. I have no doubt that December will look the same.
With an equally impressive software tie ratio, the DS was the real winner.
