Almost Cancelled: Dead Rising & Lost Planet

Mega Man creator and Capcom bigwig Keiji Inafune recently spilled some interesting revelations concerning behind-the-scenes development decisions that very nearly saw both Dead Rising and Lost Planet canceled. Inafune mentions the soaring cost of developing titles for next-gen systems as the primary reason that the powers-that-be at Capcom were hesitant to greenlight development on the two games:
"But as a game creator, if you can’t convince them to take those kinds of risks, you’ll never be able to make any good games. I think part of making games, part of being a game creator, is convincing the right people that what you’re doing is going to succeed and make money for the company. Plus, now I can use this to my advantage next time, like, 'See, you can trust me. I know what I’m talking about here.'"
I can't help but wonder what great games-that-might-have-been didn't get such enthusiastic support, or whose developers lacked the silver tongue required to secure funding. Ever since the stillbirth of Torn I've been haunted by ghosts of games that weren't...including the first incarnation of Fallout 3 and the rumored, half-imagined Baldur's Gate 3, which fell more to licensing issues than funding, but haunts me all the same.
What other great games are our alternate-reality selves enjoying somewhere, beneath their clean-burning renewable energy sources and their alternate-reality goatees?
