Boom Boom Rocket Demystified

BoomBoom1.jpg

Boom Boom Rocket from Bizzare Creations, makers of Geometry Wars, is shaping up to be a bizarre little mélange of Dance Dance Revolution and Fantavision. We have been following this title for a little while now, and have been itching for more morsels of info. The company just released a studio update on the project to iron out some of the questions about gameplay.

The gameplay is basically DDR, with some changes, mainly speed and multipliers. The game is going to increase in speed considerably, because players will be using the gamepad only, not dance mats. Similar to Guitar Hero, there will be multipliers attached to your score as you increase in speed and accuracy.

As you successfully detonate fireworks, the bar will fill. The big number is your current score multiplier. It starts at x1, and eventually hits x4 when the bar is full. Needless to say, you'll get double the points when it's on x2, treble the points at x3, etc. However, if you miss any fireworks your bar will drain a little, and potentially your multiplier could drop. The game ends if your bar empties.

When the bar on the left side fills up, the Bonus Time begins.

For a limited time the graphics will go all crazy, the crowd will go wild, and you'll get a massive x8 multiplier. It's big points time! The catch is that it only lasts for 20 seconds, so you'll want to save up your bonus runs for the busy parts of the song. There's nothing worse than activating your bonus run, only for the fireworks to naturally slow down and valuable points to be lost! The best players will no doubt save their runs for the busiest part of the songs... usually the chorus. More fireworks = more points

I am a huge fan of fireworks, and Geometry Wars, both are visually dazzling. From the looks of the screenshots, they are pushing the visual candy with this one. Don’t worry about the music, they won’t be using Cher’s Believe in this game, or anything else as heinous to the ears. The composer Ian Livingstone is remixing some classical pieces for the soundtrack. I’m hoping for the 1812 Overture, wouldn’t that be a blast? Get it, blast? Fireworks, Explosions… Anyone? Anyone? (I’m sorry, I couldn’t help the pun.)

Okay, Gypsies, Tramps and Theives, or Dark Lady, a thousand times yes. Believe, irrevocably no, but that's just my humble opinion.

"Dark Lady laughed and danced, and lit the candles one by one (clap, clap) danced to the gypsy music till the brew was done..."

Similar to guitar hero? The bonus score system sounds like a perfect copy.
