Duck Hunt 1976: Worse, But On A Wall

Games are interesting things. What is the epitome of fun to one generation can be a complete joke to the next. Take stickball for instance. Even within one's lifetime, games can take on different forms. I remember playing extremely repetitive Game & Watch and Atari games as a kid until my fingers felt likely to fall off. Now, if I were to find one of those games in my hands, I doubt I'd be willing to put as much time into them. Conversely, I understand and am more invigorated by games like chess and Settlers of Catan than I used to be.

And yet my Wii's Virtual Console has allowed for a bit of a renaissance in 8 and 16 bit gaming. Last week I spent just as much time playing Kid Icarus and Super Mario World
as I did trying to beat Twilight Princess. I find them challenging and fun, despite the clear advances in gaming that have occurred since their creation.

And then there are those games that will just always have their 15 minutes. No one knows why they work or when it will happen, but something just hits people the right way and it takes off. It wil most likely never be played again, least of all because you simply can't find it anymore. Check out this video of Nintendo's 1976 Duck Hunt released only in Japan. This isn't the Duck Hunt you grew up loving. This is projected on a sheet. And it's fuzzier. And there's no laughing dog. And it's simpler. And the sound effects suck. Yes, this is everything you loved about Duck Hunt, but worse. Hey, at least you get to shoot blurry dots on your own wall!

Is it just me or is the voice of the guy describing it kinda sexy?
