Ex-Box: A Tribute to the Xbox

rip_xbox.jpg

While multi-colored GameCubes and anorexic PS2s are still stocked at stores for super-cheap, the Xbox is no longer being produced. Game Spectrum salutes the original Xbox (bulky controller and all) and gives us a brief history of the console since its November 2001 launch. In 2002, my sister and I worked for a marketing firm and received an Xbox to play and pimp out to other college students. We’d have to lug that 10 lb. box around the city, setting up Xbox parties to promote forgettable titles like Serious Sam. Despite that, there were many good times too; the hours I spent playing Lord of the Rings and Star Wars games (favorites were The Third Age and Knights of the Old Republic) with a controller bigger than my face. And without the first Xbox, there would be no Halo, no Xbox Live and no Xbox 360 -- and therefore, no alternative to the pricey behemoth known as the PS3.* So reminisce the good ol’ days of 2001, when you took a chance with Microsoft’s first foray into the console gaming market. So long Xbox. Thanks for the memories.

I really hate to point out just the slightest error here .. but it does appear that Nintendo has made but a wonderful little console as a much much cheaper alternative to the PS3 ... it's called a wii ... maybe you've heard of it ... or stolen games from it ... or dont appreciate anything i do for you ... whatever

what cynic said. nintendo..the only real alternatve amidst all the Me-Too`s

Jaded Cynic, I meant in terms of graphical power and hardcore gaming. Clearly, you can buy a Wii instead of a PS3, but for the hardcore gamers or gamers who just like next-gen standard graphics, if there was no Xbox 360, you'd have to buy a PS3. (I'm going to punch you the next time I see you!) ;)

dear god that site makes the xbox's career sound almost as despressing as the dreamcast's and the saturn's 0o I had a Xbox and still do, I thought it gave a much better fight then what they gave it... heck with modding I still use the thing every day to play videos, much better than the 360's WMV only method -.-

WHY? WHY does the 360 only play WMV? I know it's microsoft's format and all that but if it just played mov, divx, etc. it'd be great! ... I'm pretty sure I'd wind up retiring my xbox 1 if it could -.-

I do love my Wii, but not as an alternative to anything. Not because it can't compete or isn't maxed-out enough, just because of its unique nature. It's so very much its own creature...

Whereas the 360 and the PS3, overkill polygon death machines that they are, seem more interchangeable. Might as well add the PC in that mix, too...the machines which compete for a certain type of game and gameplay (just take a look at the massive redundancies in their game libraries).

The Wii, on the other hand, is in a league of its own.

I don't know about you, but I can see a lot of gamers trying to decide between buying both a Wii and a 360, or a Wii and a new PC, or even (maybe) a Wii and a PS3. But I can't imagine that too many would forsake the Wii for a 360 AND a PS3...does that make sense?

My xbox lives on as a streaming media center and an emulation kiosk.. Doesn't everyone's?

Yeah! What Tiny said!

In my opinion, a Wii/360 combo or a Wii/PS3 combo is all any gamer really needs. And since the 360 is hella cheaper than a PS3 and came out a year earlier, that's what I got.

Although Tiny, I'd like an update on how you're liking your PS3! Do you play it more than your 360?

Play my PS3 more than my 360? Not a chance...I have begun playing some PS2 games on it (ones I wanted to play from the beginning and didn't think I'd miss rumble too much), like God of War. And I like watching Blu-ray movies on it...but in terms of current-generation gaming, I don't expect to get too much love from it for quite a while.

I followed the same pattern when the 360 came out. I got one, watched it sit there for 9 months or so, and then eventually began enjoying it when there was sufficient content and support/updates, etc. That was my personal experience, but I'm a picky gamer.

The only system I can remember enjoying straight out of the box, including handhelds, is the Wii.

Wii Launch + Zelda Launch = 1 happy customer.

I only got an xbox last year. I *was* looking forward to buying a 360 and enjoying the BC abilities, but MS chose to mess that up. So far, the best games I've gotten on the system are the Sega exclusives (Orta, Otagi, JSRF, Shenmue 2) and ports with visable differences (Metal Arms, Indigo Prophecy, another copy of Psychonauts). The system is fun, but I'm not regretting waiting to buy until the end.

The sad thing is that MS seems to be repeating the same mistakes that held me off from buying one the first round.

*Price*: just because the ps3 is more doesn't make your system any cheaper.
*Games*: outside of Dead Rising and Lost Planet, I'm not too thrilled.
*Community*: For all the great things that Live offers (trailers, demos, downloadable content), it's still the online equal of a dank, B.O. scented basement filled with thirteen year olds and homophobes. No thanks, I like to have fun when I play games.
