Fantastic Flash: Funeral Quest

The power of parody in gaming can be a catalyst for really fun experimental gameplay. Such is the case with the Fantastic Flash game Funeral Quest. It is a spoof of just about any sim game you can think of from Lemonade Tycoon to Capitalism with a heaping ladleful of the macabre. You play a cutthroat funeral director who barters, humiliates and sabotages his way to the top of the mortuary industry.
You begin the game by naming your character and the funeral home in which you run. The first order of business is to wait for a customer to show up, who represents four different economic classes of customers from the Super-Rich to the Poor. When dealing with a customer you have to judge their mood and barter with them to raise the price of the funeral arrangements. If a person is in an amicable mood, you can plus-sell the pants off of them. Once a customer gets angry, they are one foot out of the door and will not budge on their price. You can work with their mood and sway them in either direction by giving them a sympathetic response, or lay on the guilt trip to beat them into submission. Each customer presents a struggle between getting the highest amount of money from them, before they leave for another funeral home and you lose the sale. The more money you get from each customer adds to your Bury Points, which boosts your social standing in the race with other funeral homes.
Besides maintaining your line of customers, you can explore the town around you to boost your own stats and sabotage other funeral homes by hiring arsonists at the florist or breaking into the morgue at the hospital to drive more traffic your way. The beauty of this game is the highly satirical tone of the experience, and the fact that you are actually competing against other players running their own funeral homes. The player versus player aspect of the game is a highlight, because when you sabotage another funeral home you are affectively damaging another player to hurt them in their rankings. The game rewards you for doing despicable deeds by giving you more Bury Points for treachery over honor.
There are a few servers that host Funeral Quest with their own levels of difficulty and gameplay options. Check out a few of them to get into the swing of things, then join the main server for the multiplayer mayhem. Each month has tournament with an end date to tally up the winner of the month.
Currently I’m playing on the FS Funeral Quest Server (0.95) under the name Toots, and my funeral home is called Lofty Caskets. Look for me on the server and send me a message to my funeral home. Don’t even think of sabotaging me, cause I will send out my cronies to slice all of the tires on your hearse, and I mean business.
