God Of War II Demo Impressions

Colossus of Rhodes Battle

So, I picked up my copy of the God of War II demo yesterday from my local Gamestop, provided to me by my lovely and always knowledgeable games mistress. I couldn't wait to get it home, so I plugged it into our PS2 at work and began to play while a small crowd of co-workers gathered to watch. It was something akin to coming home to an old friend.

The demo basically encompasses the first level of the game which is really a long boss battle against a giant statue, The Colossus of Rhodes. The graphics looked incredible and the sense of scale involving the statue was extremely impressive. Even my non-gamer boyfriend was impressed when later I tried the demo out at home on the big TV. It reminded me so much of the Ray Harryhausen films I obsessed over as a kid (and still do), particularly Clash of the Titans. This first battle is spectacular and a great kick off to what is gearing up to be one of the last truly great games on the PS2.

The controls, while on the surface the same as the last game, have some added abilities that are a tremendous improvement. An added grappling hook ability and an improved wall climbing mechanic are the most noticeable along with some souped up special moves. I imagine the full version of the game will see more weapons and powers to add to the already solid control scheme.

This demo was everything I hoped it would be; exciting, dramatic, gorgeous and ultimately, comfortably familiar. If you haven't pre-ordered your copy yet, I would hightail it over to EB/Gamestop right away and see if they have any more of these discs left. It was definitely enough to more than whet my appetite for the real game yet to come.

And yes, for those of you who are as concerned about this as I am, Linda Hunt does provide the narration. To see some footage of this epic battle, make the jump!

This game looks amazing. It's great when a game has a look and feel so cinematic that even non-gamers (including the non-gamer boyfriends) stand in awe of the graphics. It's rare that a video game does that.
