New York Comic Con: Who Wants to Be a Superhero?

When you think of comic book conventions, your mind may conjure images of shy, socially-inept nerds (like this panda here). While New York Comic Con had plenty of those, they also had the most courageous of nerds who wanted to make a difference. The brave souls who broke out of their bashfulness and donned a homemade costume for the good of humanity. Or perhaps, they just wanted to meet Stan Lee and get on TV (if the Sci Fi Channel counts as TV). Yes, I’m talking about the folks who tried out for the Sci Fi Channel’s Who Wants to Be a Superhero?. If you’re not familiar with the reality show, the first season had a round of real-life geeks (And would-be actors? Hard to tell) wear their own costumes, make up their own superpowers and undergo a series of superhero trials. The program is hosted and judged by Stan Lee himself (often via oddly juxtaposed, pre-taped footage). Last year’s winner, the ever-dutiful Feedback, is due to receive immortalization in a Dark Horse comic book (written by Lee!) and an original movie to be aired on the Sci Fi Channel. Not too shabby...
With season two on the way (the deadline for submissions is March 17th), I decided to scope out the auditions for a little bit and see if I could spot the next comic book icon. For photos of a few superhero hopefuls, make the jump.
