Interview With Square-Enix's Hiromichi Tanaka: No More Friend Codes, Please, And An Update On A Little Series Bearing The Name "Chrono"

Square-Enix

Cubed3 was privileged to be invited to interview Square-Enix's Senior Vice President Hiromichi Tanaka on a variety of topics. ...but let's get to the meaty stuff. First off, Final Fantasy XI will not be coming to the Nintendo Wii. Why, you ask, would this game not come to the superior Wii whilst it wastes away on the PS2? Well, to put it simply...Friend Codes. Yes, those awful things are a huge turn off to Square-Enix. Here's what was said about it:

Sadly Tanaka-san does not believe the Wii hardware would be able to cope with Final Fantasy XI, which was sad to hear since the game has already appeared on the far inferior PlayStation 2. When pressed on this matter, it was revealed that the problem lies more with Nintendo’s current online stance – not wanting people to interact online without the aid of Friends Codes. However, the key point to mention is that Square Enix is currently in talks with Nintendo about resolving this point of contention!

Perhaps with pressure from such giants as Square-Enix, Nintendo will bow out of their silly Friend Code system and adopt a more user-friendly means of allowing gamers to interact. We can only hope. As for the Chrono series, Cubed3 decided to ask Tanaka-san about it. Goodness knows that the vast majority of us, or so I would like to think, want to know about the future of this legendary series. Turns out that Square-Enix has not ruled out the possibility of a future Chrono title and the chances of a Chrono Trigger port to the GBA is 50/50. Here's a summary of that part of the conversation:

The issue of the future for the Chrono games was brought up and clarification asked for, due to recent comments saying a sequel to Chrono Cross not being planned. In response, he stated that it certainly is not out of the question Chrono will make a return, and as for seeing Chrono Trigger return in any form (a port, remake or Virtual Console release – the last option currently being a 50-50 in terms of happening), it would come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (most of which are no longer staff at Square Enix).

I guess only time will tell, but I'll tell you this. I would die for another entry in the Chrono series. ..and taking the Epoch out for a spin might be a good idea, this weekend. That series is truly a precious thing and it would be a shame to never hear of it, again. Plus, if you have not played either Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross, shame on you...SHAME! In the meantime, follow the link for the rest of the major points of that very interesting interview and be sure to post your thoughts here!

By the way, what do you think of this remix of the Chrono Trigger theme? As Tiny said, "It totally shouldn't work, but it does."

We NEED another Chrono game! I would die of euphoria if they came out with another Chrono game in the next 5 years. CC is my favorite game of all time and CT is just amazing. I also wouldn't mind the FFIII treatment on Trigger (an updated port)...that would be pretty sweet.

Every time E3 or TGS rolls around, I always hope for some huge announcement that Square is finally making a third Chrono game. If this were to ever actually happen, I think I would start jumping up and down and squealing like a little girl for 5 minutes.

A DS port of Chrono Trigger would be the best thing ever. I'd prefer they not do the "3D remake" thing, though, unless the original SNES game were also on the card. I hate to say it, but the GBA just couldn't handle that game too well, so the DS is a perfect choice.

First off where I can find a copy of the ending theme remix? I love Chrono Trigger, try as I might I just couldn't get into Chrono Cross, though I do love the opening theme. A 3D remake could be cool but only if the original was included as well. What I would love is to have it reworked for the PS2 or a next gen system with a fully orchestrated score. If that happened I'd need a new pair of pants...
