Ubisoft To Produce Assassin's Creed Short Film

Lights, camera, action! Ubisoft is opening a movie studio in Montreal to shoot a live action short based on their upcoming game Assassin’s Creed. They have not released the game yet, but they seem so confident in their IP that they are shooting a film for it.
Ubisoft will cross-pollinate creative talents from their gaming studio to their film studio by having the game creators advise and work with the film crew. Ubisoft spokesperson Emmanuel Carré commented on the importance of respecting the original work, by incorporating the game designers in the movie creation process:
We want our universe to be respected. Too often, the movies made from video games don't respect the characters. The producers want to make a mainstream movie, but if the fans decide it's not good, the movie won't be a success. With our new studio, the same people making the games will be working closely with the people making the films.
The movie will be digitally distributed through websites, to iPods and Xbox Live. Carré went on to explain the reason for digital distribution over physical media, “Using an untraditional distribution form will allow viewers to edit and manipulate the film, adding their own personality to the story.”
I’m hoping that game designers will be able to understand and communicate how to translate the gaming experience to the silver screen, or iPod screen for that matter. The notion of re-editing and manipulating the movie seems interesting to an extent, but kind of gimmicky at the same time. Between the two art forms narrative and structure is the key to a successful work. Allowing viewers to manipulate the film to their desire creates a personal experience, but takes some artistry out the finished product.
