Xbox 360 IPTV Demo & Interview

For anyone who's interested in but confused by the Xbox 360's IPTV dealie-bob, here's a live demonstration and a lot of positive spin that manages to make me feel skeptical but a little more grounded concerning the specifics of the development.

Gamevideos, ExtremeTech and 1UP interview Microsoft's Chris Satchell and Albert Penello about the ease of the "next-gen media experience" that the IPTV service will bring to the 360 - seamless integration between games, movies, television. It all sounds great...but vague. The vagueness really comes to a head when the obvious question, hard drive capacity, is raised.

"There's a reason it's a detachable hard drive. At some point, we're going to do something."

After further prodding, the Microsoft guys don't cop any real answer, which is unfortunately opaque and not very friendly. Concerning disc space: "It's more something that people are going to have to get over." The Microsoft guys don't quite get it, or aren't allowed to admit that they do - "Why would anyone want to download music to their Xbox 360?" is not a particularly reasonable answer, it's antagonistic and reflective of the trend of telling users how they should want to use their products (see Sony).

They dodge questions about the Zune for a bit, but it doesn't look like their heart is in it, poor things.

The only reason I can see for putting music on your 360 would be custom soundtracks in games. Otherwise, it strikes me as being rather pointless.
