BS Zelda Does Not Mean What You Think It Does

I spend the majority of my time lamenting the fact that I don't live in Japan. It seems like every single one of my entertainment interests seems to originate from that tiny series of islands, and I'm sick with envy over how much stuff I'm missing out on, or otherwise waiting months, years, or forever for things to make their translated and localized way over here.

But sometimes, I'm grateful. Considering how much money I spend on these things already at my local Kinokuniya and over the internet, I'm afraid I would be so inundated with charges to my credit card that my life would most likely end in a brutal assault by the yakuza as I'm unable to come up with the hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt that I would somehow find a way to accrue.

Take this for example. Once upon a time there was something called Satellaview that you could hook up to your Super Famicom (SNES as it's called here) and in a system that I am far too stupid to understand, play online-ish type games over some sort of a broadcast like this remake of the classic Legend of Zelda called BS Zelda. The "BS" stands for "Broadcast Satellaview" by the way, so wipe that smirk off your face.

More info after the jump.

I'm completely at a loss as to how it works but it involves playing in real time (see the "Zelda" time counter in the upper right hand corner?), your own avatars, new dungeons and certain special abilities apparently announced by the imposing voice at intervals in the video. See if you can figure it out, because I'm just staring at the pretty graphics somewhere close to how Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past looked (it did come after) and wishing I could have spent the 14,000 yen (that's just over $120 nowadays) plus the cost of the game replaying this amazing adventure as my own blue-haired version of Link named Jasper. He loves mint ice cream and hunting Stalfos!

Rerelease on Virtual Console anyone? Let's make some more use of that Wii's internet connection! Besides porn.

I find myself wondering why they never released this version on the SNES or GBA. I'd LOVE to replay the original Zelda with those graphics.

They'd broadcast the game off a space satellite named St. GIGA and the game would be broken up into installments. You'd try to finish up your quest before the timer went out. They would release more game content the over the satellite hook up but the japanese users would tune in as if it were a regular TV show. Like "Hey, it's 2:00, time to play Zelda!"

I think the Satelleview add on was neat since it was all pre "X-Box LIVE".

BS Zelda has made the emulation circut for years though...

Link looks a little, uh, girly in that second video. And the little "yelp" he lets out when he's hit is awesome :D

that wasn't link... that was someone's designed avatar. players could create their own characters to play the game!
