Fruit Brute's DDR Fitness Challenge
I finally got the courage to purchase a scale so I could see exactly how much weight I'd put on since being blown away from my home by Hurricane Katrina and I must say I was shocked. Once the little thing stopped beeping and the flashing zeros went away, I was greeted with a whopping 204 pounds. I know this doesn't sound like much, but I do have a small frame and pre-hurricane I weighed in at 160 if that gives you any indication how big I've gotten.
Well I'm tired of sitting around moping about it and I'm going to make a change, so I went out and bought a copy of Dance Dance Revolution. I'm going to commit to 30 minutes a day of DDR and see what happens. I can only imagine it would help since saying my lifestyle is sedentary would be understating things a bit.
Starting tomorrow I will be eating right, exercising and trying to lose weight without straying from my beloved video games. And in an effort to keep myself motivated, I will be reporting my progress every Monday until I reach my goal of 160 lbs. If anyone else is up to the challenge, let me know and we can cheer each other on and post our improvement together. There's no motivation quite like 14,000 people watching your progress! Let's show them that video games can help you lose weight and throw off the shackles of the pimply overweight nerd sitting in his mothers basement playing Warcraft stereotype. In the immortal words of Miss Olivia Newton John, "Let's get physical!"

GO FRUIT BRUTE!!!
Good luck!
I recently lost around 40 pounds simply by watching what i eat and making sure to stay active. When you get tired of gaming and go outside for a bit small changes can really help you out. For example, if you're going out to eat try walking longer distances on purpose and not sweatting over getting a spot right next to where you're going. There are so many simple little things that you can do without totally overloading yourself.
For reference I'm 6'3 and used to weight 230, now i'm floating around 185-190. Staying on a set workout scheduel is the hardest part for me, so I think I'll try to follow your suit. :D
You realize you'll lose your membership as a gay Bear by losing all that weight. I'm just saying.
If you're feeling daring and live near some sort of body of water that has any sort of history of prep schools or ivy leagues nearby, you'll be lucky enough to have a crew team you can join! There's nothing more motivating than being surrounded by svelte individuals while you move in unison and get yelled at by someone referred to as a coxswain.
good luck man... i'm going through the same thing... i quit smoking about two years ago and a little before i quit i weighted about 148 lbs and i'm 5'8" and now two years later i weigh 210 lbs o_O so yeah i have a gym membership and i'm trying too so i know your pain man and good luck, i hope you can do it :)
I started doing this about a week ago, so I'm definitely into this. It was brought about when I realized that the healthiest I ever was was a few years ago when I played DDR pretty religiously. My foot got hurt one day and I just kinda stopped. I've gained some weight recently and want to loose it without going to the gym. So here I am, every morning, playing DDR.
I've also thrown in some Wii Boxing into the mix. I'm not sure how much of a workout that is, but it sure as hell is fun.
Let's do this thing!
Good luck to you!!!
Don't forget to stretch and warm up ... and add some dose of Wii Sport's Fitness (to see how you fair) and Training (to give yourself a challenge and push yourself even further) Mode to add a little strength, tone and muscle to your arms and shoulders.
So far I've gone down 20lbs and kept it off and my arms looks tighter than its been for months.
Hey Brute -
Just to warn you, when I first started DDR (all those years ago) I went from zero activity to 1+ hour / day, and never lost a pound. I think the secret is to put it on random, so you never pause to pick a song. That way, it's a continuous workout, rather than stop & go.
I wish you the best of luck - I'll be doing 30 minutes of In the Groove every 2-3 days, so let's compare notes!
im in...
just got the 360 back from the dead 3 rings
i am so in for the challange
Good luck Fruit Brute! I'm rootin' for ya!
About two years ago I dropped down from 185 to 160 over the the course of a summer. My advice? Find an activity you love doing (which it sounds like you've done). If you don't like what you're doing for excercise, there is no way you are going to keep to the schedule.
My other piece of advice is, after you've been doing the DDR for awhile, find a second activity to complement it. Having two things that you can alternate keeps either from getting boring.
It's customary to have before and after pictures by the way. Just so you know :)
I did exactly this 4 years ago when I moved out on my own. In like 4 or 5 months 1 hour of DDR every weekday morning and doing my own shopping took me from around 190 to 160. So totally go for it and good luck! My only advice would be to get mats to go under the dance pad. I didn't make any friends in the apartment below me with my kinda fast, anime music workout routine at 7:00 every morning.
I keep eating questionable meat pies and make sure I drink at least a pint of olive oil every day.
Seriously, daily cardio and a simple 10% reduction in overall calorie intake will drop your body fat in a healthy way over a sustainable period of time. Too much too fast and you run the risk of gaining it back! (ask my jeans)
You can do eet!
Good luck, Brute!
I found out it's best to get a cheap, used biking machine and watch TV while you work out. Any time you can do physical activity while you watch a show, that's a good start. Keep a healthy diet and you are you your way to losing those extra pounds! We are rooting for you! WOOT WOOT!
Best of luck good sir!
You're pretty sexy now, so you'll be even sexier after!
also thought about getting DDR for the same reasons lately, started to eat more healthy and already lost a few pounds, wonder about your experiences with DDR - since it's getting warmer i will also go to work by bike again.
OOoo me too! I just started DDRing instead of running at the gym anyway.
I'm in! I tried this before, and actually lost a few pounds just playing DDR a few times a week after I got home from work. (I probably would've lost even more if I'd also eaten better...)
Way to go, Fruit Brute! I'm looking forward to seeing your progress and best of luck with it. Even if you don't get it right the first time, you just gotta keep at it until you know what works for ya.
I keep thinking that I should try that.
I've owned DDR for quite sometime and its seems like a good (and geeky!) way to lose weight.
Since I came back to New York from Toronto, I've gained back the thirty pounds I lost from walking around the city (and even with that 30 pounds gone, I was still substantially overweight). Now I have to drive to get anywhere, so I get next to no exercise because it doesn't come naturally anymore.
Best of luck to you... and who knows, maybe I'll try it too. ;)
Rememebr to keep control of what you are eating, it's no good to justify eating more prepackaged crap because you are doing more!
Anyway, good luck!
I've lost 20 pounds in the last 2 months. The secret is to have your partner of 10 years go into the hospital and almost die, so that you end up living on Powerbars and diet soda while walking 4 or 5 miles through hospital corridors each day/night.
Since his recovery, I've put back on 5 pounds. It probably would have been more except that I'm living by his low sodium, reduced calorie intake diet while I'm home. On the road.... I'm afraid it's still Taco Bell for me.
I did the DDR thing for a month way back when and I did lose a few pounds, but we were on the second floor then. Our new place is on the ground floor, no downstairs neighbors and no house-shaking thuds, so I'm thinking after the boxes are unpacked it'll be time to take out the ol' mat again.... Of course, by then Boogie might be out for the Wii....
i'm excited and proud of you. i did the DDR fitness challenge three years ago and lost 30 pounds, and i know you can do it. but right now, after 3 straight years of the freshman 15 (45 pounds in 3 years!?!) i'm about what you are and probably around the same height. i've been thinking of ways to make my own post-winter diet and exercise but every time i lost 10 pounds i mysteriously gain it back in less than a week.
my roommate has a Cobalt Flux he doesn't use maybe i should take the challenge with you and compare. it's a lot of fun having a 60 pound DDR pad that won't slide around on you. unfortunately this time i doubt i'll be able to do it for FOUR hours or more a day. do that and you'll really drop it off.
=)
