GTA IV Trailer Impressions

GTAIVMain.jpg

Ever since I saw the roman numerals IV on the countdown site, I’ve been chomping at the bit for a glimpse of the trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. It was worth the wait. The game looks stunning. It is a serious upgrade from the previous blocky games. Now there is active lighting on the sun as a light source. There is a couple of great still shots as the sun rolls over the sky, casting shadows across the landscape to the tune of Philip Glass. Nice touch Rockstar, real classy with the minimalist composer and all.

The buildings and character models have some beautiful high-res textures on them, and the water effects are impressive as well. I spotted the statue of liberty, so it looks like they are setting this one in New York again, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they grabbed some other North Eastern cities for variety.

The only dialogue in the trailer is the voice of the seemingly immigrant main character of the game, commenting on his past and the possibilities of the new city.

“Life is complicated. I’ve killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here things will be different.”

Check out the trailer, it’s very impressive. You know this game will be a smash hit when it hits shelves on October 16th. I'll be there, will you?

It's so strange. While I have loved most of Rockstar's "other games" (the underrated Manhunt, Bully and Warriors), I've never been able to connect with GTA. While the series' gameplay seems like a love/hate thing, I don't think anyone can say anything remotely negative about the visuals in this trailer.

If the final game comes close to the visuals shown here (this looks like it's already in-game), Rockstar has fully realized the world they've been trying to entice players with since the original entry in the series. This looks tremendous!

Looks good, graphics are pretty etc etc, but this trailer left me feeling somewhat disappointed. For a trailer that was hyped up the wazoo, there was very little actual gameplay shown.

loved the more "mature", less urban-spoofy vibe from it, especially appreciated the music. i thought it sounded familiar, but couldn't figure out what/who it was. anyone know which PG song it was?

The Philip Glass song sounds like two songs, Cloudscape and Vessels from the most excellent movie Koyaanisqatsi.

Wow. Their satirical recreation of New York City looks impressively real. If I buy this game, I can explore my neighborhood without ever leaving my house again! Whee!

To the new guy in GTA for the trailer:
"Fat Chance Buddy!"

As toots mentioned the music is from Koyaanisqatsi - but the whole trailer is a homage to the film also (with some shots echoing the films cinemaphotography) - just in case it escaped your attention.

All that hoopla for a few seconds of not much info...lordy.

The environments look gorgeous and detailed. And it will take place in New York. But we already knew that.

So....the environments look gorgeous...I think the grass on my lawn just grew a little...I hear a cricket chirping...

im not a fan of GTA, just because a game lets you steal cars, sell drugs, and run away from the cops doesnt mean it's good. but i always liked the way they let you travel a huge city and do everything, but the stories and just the general whole "just go kill shit" form of the games always turned me off from them. but this one looks different, it looks a little more mature then the previous ones, and i might think about getting it (i'd have to get a 360 first though...). hopefully it'll be good.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
