Immersion Lawsuit Settled: Sony May Vibrate Again

Sony and Immersion finally settled their lawsuit concerning force feedback patent violations with the PS2 DualShock controller. They have also agreed to work together on vibration capabilities for upcoming peripherals.

Immersion CEO Victor Viegas prepared a statement about working with Sony again.

"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us. Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products.

The terms of the settlement state that Sony will award Immersion compensation for damages, interest, pre-judgment interest, and costs. They will retain obligatory licensing fees that have been ordered by the District Court, which were already paid. The specific monetary amount of the settlement has not been released.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai commented on partnering with Immersion.

We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers. We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies.

This is amazing, just a few days ago we reported an interview with Phil Harrison claiming that rumble is a last-gen feature. Now Sony is in cahoots with Immersion to bring rumble to the PS3. I love how executives communicate, and stay on the same page. It’s comforting, really.

If it gets it's rumble back, Maybe the PS3 will find it's true success as a $600 marital aide.

Maybe game execs are more gay-friendly then we thought. It's hard to say "Rumble is SO last gen" without sounding like an 80's valley girl.

I think I recall at E3 that Sony claimed that rumble would not work well with the six-axis tilt. Though that was likely a lame excuse since the Wii-mote has rumble and much more motion sensing to it.

Anyrate, Sony should have had rumble for the PS3 all along. Now people will have to shell out money for new controllers since I doubt a downloadable patch will upgrade the controllers.

Mike TV, "rumble is so last gen" was my take on his comment. Maybe I should have added 'like' and an 'um' to it to make him sound more idiotic. He didn't actually say 'so' last gen. I just wanted to clarify that.

Valley girls rule. And rumble is, like, totally important to my, like, gaming, like, experience, you know? What. EVER.

I miss Heathers.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
