Kotaku's Crecente & His Big Swingin' Balls Stand Up To Sony
Long story short, yesterday Kotaku posted a very clearly demarcated rumor from a credible-sounding source, concerning the possible unveiling of a big new "social feature" for the PS3: namely, the PlayStation Home, a kind of cross between the Mii Channel and Xbox 360 achievements and Animal Crossing; you create an avatar, who has a room, and you fill that room with game-specific items unlocked through an analog of the achievement system. Or so went the rumor.
The always-ready-to-bully powers at Sony, however, went kaboom, and sent Kotaku editor Brian Crecente an email informing him that Sony "will be canceling all further interviews for Kotaku staff at GDC and will be dis-inviting you to our media event next Tuesday." They also demanded the return of Kotaku's debug PS3 and just generally behaved like, well, Sony.
To say that the internet community received this news poorly would be a bit of an understatement. By the end of the day enough people, websites, newspapers and magazines had rallied to Kotaku's defense that Sony retracted their threats (which must have been quite a pill for a blackguard such as Sony to swallow).
But the best part?
The best part is that the GameJew wrote a song about Crecente, his big ol' balls, and the tall tale of the blog that beat the bully. Cry freedom!

I think (and this is pure speculation) that Sony got pissed because this feature is likely the big announcement Harrison (or someone else) was talking about the company making at GDC. If this is true, it still does not excuse their childish behavior. What the hell is going on with this company? As a loyal consumer of the Playstation brand, this is very dissapointing.
I've said it before..Sony doesn't care about the US or out dollar...sure they'll take it but in general...they treat us like crap. This is just another example. Sony is pathetic and soon they'll see what this type of stupid behavior gets them. First the stupid Viral online stuff that didn't work...then the stupid racist ads plastered all over the place..now bullying journalists and bloggers...Maybe they didn't get the memo that they aren't such a giant anymore and sometimes its true when you say...Oh how the mighty have fallen.

As one editor at 1UP.com pointed out, what's interesting is that if Sony had taken the PR line Microsoft's adopted -- "We don't comment on rumors." -- nothing would have happened, the whole thing would have been tremendously deflated and it would have remained a rumor until Harrison announced it...
As it is, now EVERYONE and their mom's sibling's cousin knows what Sony's big announcement is going to be.
If you just pretend it's a rumor, nobody has any reason to believe it's real... even when it's based on an "anonymous source..."
This is sad because this whole incident is a dealbreaker to the last holdouts for Sony. They had to retract or it would have been pure, unadulterated suicide and it still might. All over a rumored POSITIVE feature for PS3 too.
