Mother 3 Translation Gameplay Footage

It seems like I have been following Mother 3 for almost 10 years now. When the series first appeared as Earthbound in the US for the SNES, I was hooked by the decidedly old school 8-bit look of the game, and the hilarious alien invasion plot. Then the sequel appeared on the back of the N64 box as Earthbound 64. I was psyched to play it, but it was canned and never released. So when Mother 3 was announced for the GBA, I figured that I would be able to play this title I lusted for those many years ago. With great hope, comes great tragedy, for the game will never see a stateside release.

There is still hope. The rabid Mother fans at Mother 3.org has been painstakingly translating this title, and has video to prove it. It shows a small strip of a dungeon, with several fight scenes. They have made some serious progress, which has been documented on the site. Once the translation is complete, it will only be available to play with an emulator. This is a shining example of the determination of fandom. Long live Mother 3! If Nintendo would release this on the Virtual Console, they could pile up some fat stacks of cash. I would download it, would you?

Aside from the fact that fighting the same monster 3 times in a row and A-mashing to get through the text may not be the ideal way to present your translation progress, I wouldn't buy this game even if I had a Wii.

I don't think Nintendo is inherently evil, but neither are (most) new born babies. It's money and/or power that corrupts people into being the bastards they become. Nintendo probably got their first fix of this when they started re-releasing Super Nintendo classics on the GBA at full price. Most people who bought these games had played them before on the super nintendo. Videogamers are a sure-fire cash cow when you tap their nostalgic vein.

Along comes the Wii with it's virtual console. They don't charge full price any more, but now it's nothing more than downloading a rom which has another side effect: it kills the secondary market, bc once you have downloaded that game it's yours forever, no borrowing or selling allowed.

I liked Earthbound, I really did. But if Nintendo cash in on allowing their customers to download a game they essentially shelved, and waited for the fan base to translate it, they deserve what's coming to them: This guy will mod his Wii so fast they won't know what hit them. Or hook his laptop up to his TV - I've done it before and I'll do it again. Fairness may be denied for a while, but sooner or later it'll even out. Piracy ftw, yar! I been rantin' again..

If Nintendo shut the project down it would only mean they were going to release the game translated, so no worries there. Btw, I was under the impression this would work with a gba flash cartridge. Was I mistaken?
