New Shadowrun Trailer Online
The first official trailer for Microsoft's upcoming Shadowrun has been released! It looks... well, to be blunt, I'm not sure I'm really digging the "Team Fortress With Orcs And Elves" feeling that permeates the whole video. Granted, some of the combat abilities and magic look a bit interesting, but I'm really hoping the game isn't just one giant firefight after another. One of the beauties of the pen and paper version of Shadowrun was that players could create some really interesting and unique characters that were able to move through their world in a myriad number of ways (think like Oblivion or Arcanum); this little video doesn't really portray that. We should probably withhold judgment until more footage is released, but this trailer has me worried.
If you're on a Mac, the official website's version of the trailer won't play because it's using some new type of WMV codec.

Shadowrun is one of those RPGs that would probably work better as either a one-person or a multi-player computer game. Back in the day, Shadowrun games would always bog down in "now the decker does her computer thing; everyone go order pizza" and "now the shaman does his astral thing; maybe the rest of you can set up the Monopoly board." Perhaps with a computer handling everything instead of forcing a human GM to deal with one thing at a time, there could be a nifty game here ...
... not that I'm getting any of that from the trailer. I wouldn't have even known it was Shadowrun without the logo.
