Nintendo Responds To GameStop's Claim That Wiis Are Being Held Captive

Yesterday, GameStop boss, Dan DeMatteo, claimed that Nintendo “intentionally dried up their supply because they made their numbers for the year” with the Wii. In response, Nintendo VP of Marketing and Corporate Communications, George Harrison, had this to say:
“No, that’s not at all the case. We have worldwide territories that are all competing over the available production. The Japan and European markets are doing extremely well with the Wii. People in Japan at NCL [Nintendo Co. Ltd.] are making the best decisions that they can about which products get shipped to which market and when.”
In speaking directly about GameStop, he added:
“GameStop’s an important customer,” Harrison said. “Every retailer would want to have more [Wiis]. I think [DeMatteo’s comments] may have been GameStop’s way of trying to request more.”
What do you think? Truth or dare!?
Nintendo Rejects Wii Shortage Plot [Next-Generation]

Gamestop should take a cup of STFU! After all they are selling only extreme expansive bundles (at least it's what I can see on their page) and just after the customers money I guess >_>
What a bunch of Dumb asses - That guy still has a job? Now you know that they treat everyone like shit from the Top of the company all the way down to the customers that walk into thier stores.
The exec clearly has no idea of how the real world works - I find it very hard to believe in a conspiracy theory of Nintendo holding back. You still can't buy a Wii here (UK) - I've tried, but that's because anything that gets brought in, gets sold instantly.
The more consoles Nintendo can get out there before the buss dies down the better for them, as they ahve already said they make a profit on each one, but think about all the accessories they sell. I don't know anyone with a Wii who doesn't have at least 3 games, and 2 Wiimotes (about half the people I know with them have 4, and half of those have 4 nunchucks too) which is another nice pile of gold for them.
yay for hype!
Well, I am SURE lack of Wii's in the UK is due to Nintendo marketing - and that involves toying with supply to increase demand.
Why?
Nintendo's marketing means nothing in Portugal - because its non-existing. Result? Wii's on shelves everywhere. My local supermarket hasnt sold one for 2 months now.
Last night we were talking about continued lack of Wiis in stores. Like so many others, I was in Target buying DS games on sale and saw two PS3s sitting on the shelf. Not a hint of a Wii. In fact they've rearranged the shelf reserved for Wiis and put more games there instead.
My reply before wasn't clear - I kind of said they can't be toying with supply because they aren't any here. Kind of non-sensical!
What I was trying to say was there aren't any available, but if there are they get sold instantly. They could quite easily get a hell of a lot more over here and sell them straight away, still having a shortage (assuming that's what they want).
More profit, still a shortage, they would be quids in.
And what do you know.... This week Nintendo convenientely reveals plans for a new hardware manufacturer to speed up production - just in time to explain why next month and May there's suddenly more Wii's
.. Not because they have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere waiting for the marketing dpt. Ok
I'm getting tired of cynical brands - We already knew of Sony and Microsoft bs before, now add Nintendo to the lot
T
I'd like to see pictures of unsold Wiis sitting on supermarket shelves, myself, assuming they have camera phones in Portugal.
Failing that, getting some kind of mail order business going seems like it would be beneficial, assuming they also have international shippers in Portugal.
I f*cking hate Gamestop. I worked for one during this holiday season, and Gamestop corp. had the individual stores hold the Wii's. They threatened to fire us if we even told customers we had Wii's in stock. We had to hold them until certain dates when we expected large crowds in the mall.
