OLPC's XO Gets An Open Source SimCity From EA

Will Wright and EA are developing an open source version of the original SimCity for distribution on the One Laptop Per Child XO computer. The OLPC is an affordable laptop that costs around $100 and was designed to teach children about computers, especially those in developing countries. The laptop was designed by the non-profit U.S. based OLPC trade organization that plans on shipping 5-10 million units to several nations to distribute to their schoolchildren.
Wright hopes to provide the game to help children learn about programming video games. Since the title is open source, kids can dig around in the code and get a hands on understanding of the mechanics of the game.
The OLPC XO computer is a beautiful invention. By providing children with the tools needed to step into the information age, it levels the playing field and allows them to learn and develop computer skills like children in more developed countries.
