Phil Harrison Discusses Porn On The PS3

The folks at Three Speech sat down with Phil Harrison after his keynote speech at GDC, and he had some savory words to say about the possibilities of porn on the PS3. Actually he was speaking about the private versus public spaces of home. Essentially the public spaces will be under Sony control while the private spaces are just that, private. You can play whatever you have on your PS3 hard drive in your personal Home, whatever the content may be.
Q: What about uploading porn from your PS3’s hard-disk to your private space? And maybe inviting people you don’t necessarily know back and them being slightly offended by what they see, then going to a moderator?
PH: Well I’m disappointed that you would use those as the first questions. I think Home should be used for a much wider and more beneficial scope than that, but I think that people can express their creativity inside Home in a wide variety of ways and it’s not necessarily for us to dictate what that should be. However, if somebody feels uncomfortable about an encounter on Home, it’s very easy for them to ban that person from their friends list…
He says that there will be no animations for avatars that would be considered lewd. Animations will be restricted to waving or touching in a very social way. Just a reminder social “touching” leads to spreading viruses, so protect your investment with some PS3 penicillin. It’s simple just send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Phil Harrison courtesy of Three Speech. Don’t worry the package will arrive in a plain brown wrapper to save you the public embarrassment of catching a virtual social disease.

FURTHER PHIL HARRISON INTERVIEW FROM GDC [Three Speech]

I don't mean to sound mean, but this is why I hate online games. I've got 3 kids (7, 4, and 2), and yes, they go online (Disney, NickJr, etc). And we have the Wii hooked up so we can play with other family members.
Whenever, you know, Nintendo gets online gaming working.
*cough*
Anyway. The point is, this is a "white list" versus "black list" issue in my mind. In the former, *I* decide who I want to interact with. I know every person on my address book on my console, and I don't have to worry about my kids running into Joe Pedophile or something. If I ever get an Xbox, it won't go anywhere near the net until the kids are old enough I don't have to worry about seeing them on "To Catch a Predator" or something, or when my daughter asks me "Daddy, why did this man ask me how deep I could [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED]?".
Yeah, Friend Codes suck - but I like having the power of pre-filtering out the assholes. I know - not everybody has kids out there, and sorry.
