USA Today Claims PS3 Is Heading Up The Rear In The Console Race

PS3InToilet.jpg

With a recent article appearing in USA Today’s Tech – Gaming column, Mike Snider reports that the Nintendo Wii is outselling the PS3 almost 2-to-1.

Sony's new PlayStation 3 video game has gone from top dog to underdog in record time. Despite the buildup and hype around its arrival in November, the PS3 has been outsold so far — at a rate of almost 2-to-1 — by the Nintendo Wii.

Snider gathers some figures from the NPD Group and bases the rest of the article on the evaluation of that information. He quotes Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, "The PS3 is sucking wind right now.” Croal claims there are many factors contributing to the suckage, like price, negative buzz, and some doubt concerning the success of the console.

I think it’s about time that we stop hating on the PS3. It’s another console in the race that will bring it’s own brand of gaming, once the library is fleshed out. The PS3 might not be for everybody right now, but give it some time. Not every ship sails smoothly in the beginning of the trip. The leap to HD entertainment is happening now, and I don’t think the technical difficulty in tackling the transition has really been taken into consideration. Sony may have overestimated what people are willing to pay for HD gaming in the beginning of the life of this system. That will change. The price will eventually have to drop and developers will start to come back to Sony. Look at how well they did in the last generation with the support of all of the developers that worked on the system. Don’t think that Sony is a one trick pony. There will be some surprises up ahead.

Nope. I won't stop hating until Sony is dead, dead, dead! Between rootkits and SOE(as a whole), they need the corporate death penalty.

In a way I think Sony is dead, dead, dead already. They beefed up the hardware and thought that would be enough for the new generation. Yes, most of the screens for PS3 games look gorgeous but I'm definitely more interested in the games I can play on the Wii. The PSP seems like a really nice piece of hardware but again, the DS is more compelling to me. Nintendo made the right choice by focusing on innovation for this console cycle. I know more people that own Nintendo consoles or handhelds (who also happen to be "non-gamers") and I don't think they based their decision on graphics alone. Right now graphics are the only edge the PS3 has on its competitors and in that regard, I think Sony is a lame duck.

It's too early to write off the PS3 entirely but it's clear that Sony has an arduous uphill battle to convince people to invest in their product.

Also, PS3 R teh suxx0rs!!1!!one

I wouldn't be so optimistic about PS3, because practically every decision Sony has made concerning the console has been wrong from a consumer's point-of-view.

I live in Europe, so the situation's is going to be even worse here. The price is much higher, the backwards compatibility is either questionable or nonexistent when it comes to PS2 and PS1 games, and the console doesn't offer anything that it's competitors doesn't (games, online services, shops).

I'm just waiting for the announcement that FF XIII and Soul Calibur IV will be released for XBOX 360 as well, and I'll show PS3 my round hairy butt.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else. Graphics wise, the Xbox 360 looks just as good as the best the PS3 has to offer. Hardware wise, they are more similar than they are different (360's processor and the Cell are closely related). Sony may have had success if they had a better price point and less complicated hardware, but those 2 choices in design are going to continue to haunt this console. Even if they do fix the problems and get some games out for it, it is still too damn expensive for most people, especially considering most dont have HDTVs yet. Nope, it just too much, too early, and now its too late to fix it, especially when you consider the competition.

I still believe that the PS3 has a bright future. Though it may not win this "console war", I think that when the prices drop in the future because of the changes they are doing to the processor and the emulation of PS2 games, more people will be inclined to buy one. So far the PS3 doesn't have that many games, so we will have to see what it can do to surprise us. I'm waiting for some info from the Team Ico game they announced. It's still too early to call a veredict IMHO.

The PS3 might find it's way to my home possibly with the release of "LittleBigPlanet" - I start to believe that they will do things better after that awful start...

We can't count Sony out of the console war already, but they do have an uphill battle to fight. If they don't start moving PS3s and fleshing out their library, developers aren't gonna keep their titles PS3 exclusive, which is what happened with Capcom and Devil May Cry 4. Game developers have movie-budget sized budgets and they want their games to reach as many people as possible. Sony needs to keep their exclusives and lower their price if they want to try and made any headway.

You know how much time I'll give the PS3? Enough time to lower that stupid price and offer some real bang for my buck. Blue Ray...PLEASE....most people can't tell the difference.
