Wii Wins...Again

Wii!

According to independent data gathered by the NPD Group, 335,000 Wiis were sold in America in the month of February! Holy shite! That's a bunch! Only one system sold more in February, and that was the Nintendo DS. I guess Nintendo must be doing something right. It's amazing how so many people can be caught up in impulse shopping. With sales figures like that, it's no wonder why Nintendo is having a helluva time keeping up with demand.

I still have not ever seen a Wii in stock at any retailers in the New Orleans area...how about your market? Now whether it's a case of artificial demand or not...who knows? I most certainly don't. ...but I do know this. I love my Wii and I find it to be a blast, especially when I have people over. Press release after the jump.

Nintendo News: Wii Wins Again

According to independent sales data released by the NPD Group, the Wii(TM)
from Nintendo was America's best-selling video game console in the U.S. again
in February, with consumers snapping up virtually every system available in
America totaling more than 335,000 units.

Only one game system sold more in February, the portable Nintendo DS(TM),
with sell-through of 485,000 units.

Together, Nintendo systems represented 54 percent of all hardware sales in
February, more than those of all other manufacturers combined.

"We're gratified that the explosive appeal of Wii, in terms of both new
players and new ways to play, has created unprecedented demand, substantially
beyond supply," says Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. "But
we also understand that there are hundreds of thousands of consumers still
waiting to get their hands on the system so we continue to both ship more
units to retail every week and work non-stop to build capacity."

Reports from households across the country indicate that Wii has become
the centerpiece for weekend parties, a new method for improving athletic
technique and losing weight, and a landmark product for generating
cross-generational fun.

The strength of Wii and Nintendo DS was also apparent in monthly software
sales where three of the top four best-selling games for the month (Wii
Play(TM) and The Legend of Zelda(R): Twilight Princess for Wii, and Diddy
Kong(R) Racing DS for Nintendo DS) play exclusively on Nintendo systems. In
addition, so far this year 10 of the top 20 best-selling games are exclusive
for Nintendo hardware.

I was lucky enough to have a Wii at launch (thanks to an expensive bundle) but having tried to find one for a Wii-less friend, I can assure you that you are either met with (a) blank stares, (b) derisive laughter, or (c) sighs of exhaustion if you ask any retailer around San Francisco when they are expecting another shipment.

What's amazing is these things are not only NOT sitting around on shelves, they're not even lasting 10 minutes after stores open. I can't imagine what sort of sales numbers Nintendo would have if supply was ample. It's nuts.

i once saw one available on shelves, and it got taken as soon as i saw it (seriously, the second i saw it, someone picked it up) oh well, ive got one anyways so i was happy for him :P

I saw one once and almost bought it, but they were charging $350 instead of $250 and I balked. I'm still Wii-less. :(

I called a local Wal-Mart (on a whim because everyone else was out) back in Jan. and they had 3. I made the drive in 20 minutes (instead of the normal 30+) and managed to get one.

Some of my friends are still trying to get one at certain game 'botiques' to redeem a giftcard and hasn't had any luck yet.

I find it interesting that Wal-Mart was able to keep 3 in stock long enough for me do drive over to get it, but all of the game-centered stores in the area are perpetually out.

335,000, huh? I'd die to know how many of those were purchased at the suggested retail price and how many were bought at inflated rates.

Also, considering that many were bought, I'm shocked that so many people I know who would totally buy one still can't.

Don't get me wrong -- I love my Wii. I just wish everyone else could have their own, too.

I searched for one a few weeks ago and couldn't find a Wii in any gaming store. All the salemen also told me it'd take quite some time before new ones would become available.
Then eventually I found a showmodel in a department store and bought it immediatly. I've been very happy with it. And I've only played Wii Sports so far.

I have to say, I am suprised at how much fun I have been having with this little system. It's got that special something, that's for sure.

I don't know about American retailers, but on the PAL side of things both the local Electronics Boutique and Myer (big department store) here in Melbourne (Australia) have had available Wii's on shelves for the past couple of weeks!
