David Jaffe Disses Blu Ray, Sony Rebuts
Outspoken God of War creator David Jaffe spilled some rather savory beans in a recent interview with Gametrailers.com. In the second half of the interview, when asked about the PS3 and what he would have done differently with it, Jaffe responded with,
“I probably would have taken the Blu-ray out and sold it for less money.”
Many have said that the exclusion of the Blu-ray would have reduced the price of the system considerably, to make the system more affordable to a greater audience. That would have been nice for the audience and the developers. More systems in more hands mean more possible profit for developers. The difference is, Jaffe is a Sony employee. You don’t hear many developers biting the hand that feeds them. Leave it to Jaffe to gnaw it to the bone.
Dave Karraker Sr. Director of Corporate Communications at Sony had to come up behind Jaffe and sweep up the pieces with a statement to GameDaily.biz.
David Jaffe is an industry pioneer who has earned the right to speak his mind on anything he wants when it comes to videogames. While we respect his opinion, we feel strongly that the future of gaming lies in the ability to deliver more to the consumer -- more gameplay options, more lifelike graphics, more dynamic sound -- all in high definition. To do that, you need a storage vehicle such as the 50 GB Blu-ray disc, because your standard 9 GB DVD simply can't handle the demands of true next-generation gaming.
Wow, it seems like all of the Sony execs are hooked up to the great Borg cube at SCEA. Figures as much. You can't have an employee come out against a feature of a product that the company is counting on, without defending it. Also Sony knows that Jaffe is responsible for two of the greatest successes on the PS2, and will one day bring that magic to the PS3.
