Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky Takes Its Turn Back

Dragon Quest IX, for any of you out there who were worried about the real-time battle system, will keep it's long time turn-based system, according to Weekly Shonen Jump. In DQ IX, the enemies will be visible on the field and you will be pulled into battle (in 3D) upon contacting them. From that point, you will select your actions from a menu, much like any normal RPG, be it attacking, casting spells or some other options. As for multiplayer, you'll be able to chose your actions from the bottom of the screen.
The article also reveals that you will be able to change the appearance of your characters, a first for the series. You'll be able to change your "height, weight, face, hair as well as your costume." Unfortunately, it is not yet known if costuming is dependant on your class or not...but I would love to have all of them in pink tutus during battle (if that were even an option)! Still, I'm looking forward to Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky's release later this year.

You can see the enemies on the field AND turn based battles!
*sigh*
I think, I'm in love...
Yes, very much like the Chrono series...or so I would think.
Oh thank god they didn't go with a real-time system. I'd hate a repeat of the disaster that was FFXII's battle system...
FFXII's battle system was alright by me.
But I'm liking that developers are moving away from "random battles" more and more. I still like turn based more than straight up action for my RPG's too.
Bluebreaker, Shin loathes FFXIIs battle system. Believe me, we've been in-depth on it.
As for this, I still dunno what to think. I'm glad it's turn based but I'm not all that psyched for it. DQ just isn't the same caliber of a game as it used to be. DQVIII was very stale and slow and very much turn based. Maybe real time was what the series needed to shake it up and get it interesting again.
