Final Fantasy I & 2 Redux Again: PSP Style

Just in case you didn't play any of the other 3 reiterations of the first Final Fantasy, Square-Enix is now releasing a special remake only for the PSP in Japan later this month, and a remake of FF2 is coming out shortly after in commemoration of their big 20 year anniversary. Although I'm naturally loathe to spend money on a game I already own and have passed several times, I have to say it looks like they did a great job.

Without losing any of the simple top-down feel of the game, they've revamped graphics in a crisp and pleasant way. Magic and fog have a beautiful smooth transparency, and dungeons and towns have a new density that really seems to add to the feel of the world in the game. All monster graphics have also been redone, with some of your favorite enemies looking more detailed and badass then ever before. Of course the same battle and game schematic is in place, choose your four warriors at the beginning and save the world from Chaos.

I'm frankly surprised that FF1 and FF2 aren't being released on the same disc, but Sony and Square-Enix made a pact long ago to drain game players of every possible penny/yen, so it makes sense on that standpoint. There will always be gamers (especially Japanese Final Fantasy fanatics) willing to shell out for both games on a new platform, and both companies know this.

If you own a PSP and are one of these aforementioned Final Fantasy nerds, perhaps something to anticipate?

The beautiful sprites are alluring, but hopefully they don't charge full price for each game.

As a self-professed Final Fantasy Fanaticâ„¢, even I think this is just too much. This is a game that has been released on the NES (twice in Japan), the Wonderswan, the GBA, the PlayStation, and cellphones. I have no need for this one.

Agree with Eric - apart from the slightly tarted-up graphics, it just looks like DoS with the PSX version's cutscenes. If they'd given it a FF3DS-style makeover I might've considered it, but what'd be the point in buying the same game yet again?

Paul, what about the loyal Sony fans that never got the GBA versions?

Not everyone owned a GBA and not everyone owns a DS.

Now, if GayGamer.net can get a giveaway from Sony/SquareEnix of this game and a PSP, that would definitely get a lot of attention...go on Pirate Prince, pass the word around the castle.
