God of War Mystery Site Reveals Its Secrets

IsleofRhodes.jpg

Like many of my reporter brethren, I stayed up late last night to see what was going to happen at the IslandofRhodes.org website. You may remember a few weeks ago when the mysterious website appeared, displaying a countdown clock. What it was counting down to, no one knew. Rumors abounded that it was something to do with God of War on the PSP or the GoW movie or even GoW III. When questioned by IGN, Sony said that it had nothing to do with any of things, but rather was a site for true hardcore GoW fans.

So, I waited with baited breath until midnight last night to see what would come of all this . The magic hour hit and I was infuriated to see that the clock simply rolled over to add two more days to the countdown. Needless to say I headed off to bed grumbling curses under my breath. Upon waking this morning, I refreshed the countdown page just to see if something would happen and lo and behold, I was taken to a new page.

What greeted me upon arrival was a video clip with some menus. Further investigation revealed that there were two video clips available, one detailing the Colossus of Rhodes Battle and the other detailing the Pegasus portion of the game. Each clip is accompanied by some "commentary tracks", the Colossus clip has three different tracks by different people who worked on the game including director Cory Barlog. The Pegasus battle has two tracks, one by Barlog and another by the level designer and environment article. A second page is also available through a "Proceed" button and contains a brief history of the City of Rhodes and a wallpaper in three different sizes.

A couple of videos and a single wallpaper? I felt a bit like the kid in A Christmas Story when he discovers his Little Orphan Annie decoder ring was just a means to broadcast a crummy Ovaltine commercial. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting, but it was a little something more than what I actually got. Granted, we were never promised any sort of earth shattering news, but whoever was behind this site must have known the kind of hype and speculation that would be built up surrounding it's mysterious contents. Sure, the information provided is diverting, but did it really warrant a two week countdown clock?

If you find director commentaries of interest, you'll definitely want to check out the site but if you were expecting something spectacular with news that would rock your socks off, I'm afraid you'll be a bit disappointed.
