Miyamoto on Wii

Miyamoto_Wii.jpgGamePro has posted an exclusive interview with Shigeru Miyamoto. I have been excited about the Wii since luckily scoring my system on launch day. However, I don't have that many games for it yet and have wondered about where Nintendo intends to take things. Judging by Miyamoto's reaction to the wild success:

Personally, I prepared myself for the possible reality that the Wii might face an uphill battle in America, so to see that it has become this big of a hit here and that it's selling as well as it is in Japan is a huge relief. It's left me very excited and it's something that I wasn't particularly expecting.
I am beginning to understand why we have yet to see a real Wii blockbuster. However, he goes on to say:
There are also other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting.
This means our wait may be nearing an end. In fact he also addresses something I have been wondering about since the beginning, networked games:
One other thing that I think is going to be the next big challenge for Nintendo is related to the idea of network entertainment. A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming. What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment.

I think that will give rise to more social-based communities including those created by users, which is going to be a very interesting and exciting area for us to explore.

So while this doesn't answer all my questions, it does seem to indicate that Nintendo is headed in the direction for which I have hoped. What do you think?

Sounds like Nintendo's more intrested in online social networking than online gaming...which is the exact opposite of what most gamers wanted. However,it seems to be something that Nintendo can really take advantage of. The more they talk about online the more it seems (to me) as if they heard what goes on in XBOX Live (the abrasive people) and they want nothing to do with a system like that.

MORE decent-to-GREAT games on your Nintendo Wii. There is a drought: and it extends for the next 12 months as well. Third party support? Hello, is there anybody in there?
