MTV News Profiles Gay Gamers...And We Help!
MTV News producer Bernard Lumpkin has given the massive MTV audience a taste of gay gaming reality: Bernard and his production team followed the gay gaming crew around GDC last month, filming our roundtable discussions, late-night gaming sessions (including one night at the Pilsner that was not the night of GayGamer party, so don't get confused if you were there) and taking a peek into the world of gays who game.
They also interviewed many industry notables, including the fabulous Brenda Brathwaite, designer Jeb Havens, Joystiq blogger and GayGamer alum Alexander, as well as a trio of GayGamer.net homeboys: Fruit Brute, Boy of Tomorrow, and a certain T. Dancer. MTV veteran John Norris narrates the news piece from within the Nintendo World Store, and focuses more on gay gamers' call for freedom of choice that included their gayness in mainstream games, rather than specifically targeted gay content or entirely gay games. A theme we've heard before, and one which hopefully, if spoken often and loudly enough, will have its effect.

"Grand Theft Auto...Fabulous!" God that was great lol, but yeah they're right its not so much that there should be gay only games. The choice to either be gay or not is what really should be included in these game worlds that are being tauted as "completely free/open-ended"

While I certainly agree that open-ended possibilities for game characters to do any number of things is a great strength of modern games. I would love it if there was a badass story driven game (like GoW or GTA) where the main character is gay, and straight people would have to pretend or infer out-of-context for a change.
I also think it's telling that the times the piece airs are so late. "Hey look gay people play games too; but wait ... you didn't see it because we're afraid people will object if we tell you this in prime-time."
I guess I'm in militant mood, in the end (no pun intended) it's decades beyond a news story on local TV about games or gays. I should probably go play some Loco Roco and mellow-out. Peace.
