Official Guitar Hero II Whammy Bar "Fix" Freezes Console?

By now, you've probably heard of the whammy bar issues with the Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II controller. Earlier, we reported a D.I.Y. fix, but if you've been patient, now you'll allegedly be able to download an update to fix your whammy issues without messing with your guitar. From the Guitar Hero forums:
A title update for Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 will be available on Xbox Live at 4:00 am PDT on Saturday, April 14 that should resolve the situation where input from the whammy bar was not always recognized. Downloading the update should resolve this issue for all Activision Guitar Hero branded guitar models.
However, people have reported that the update freezes their Xbox 360 and some even got the Red Ring of Death. Yikes. Anybody experiencing the same issues?

People say that about every 360 update.
Either there's something faulty with the way updates are applied, or Xboxes that are already on the fritz are especially likely to have problems with updates.
Or people are pouring coffee into their Xboxes and blaming it on updates.
There's probably nothing wrong with the patch.
I have had no problems with my whammy bar or the patch. The price of the DLC, however...
I have one of the supposedly faulty model numbers, but my whammy bar works just fine, and has since the day I bought it. So why should I download a patch to fix something that isn't broken if it could possibly brick my console?
I installed the patch and GHII froze everytime I tried to play it. I got rid of the patch and no problem. Reinstalled the patch same as before, uninstalled patch again no problem.
