PC World's 50 Best Tech Products Redefines "Best"

tech_products.jpg

Earlier this week, PC World posted a list of their 50 Best Tech Products of All Time. Like Bill Clinton’s usage of the word “is,” the terms “best,” “tech,” “products” and “all time” are pretty arguable; the list includes a wide range of specific games, programs and devices. Their criteria:

First and foremost, it must be a quality product. In many cases, that means a piece of hardware or software that has truly changed our lives and that we can't live without (or couldn't at the time it debuted). Beyond that, a product should have attained a certain level of popularity, had staying power, and perhaps made some sort of breakthrough, influencing the development of later products of its ilk.

Meanwhile, “all time” really means "since the invention of the PC": “Note that we're looking only at technology that has arisen since the dawn of the personal computer, so don't expect to see the cotton gin and the transistor radio on the list.”

Thus, PC World’s inclusion of certain products makes me wonder about the exclusion of others: Tetris but not Pong or Pac-Man? World of Warcraft but not Diablo? (If you’re gonna pick a Blizzard title.) And what about MP3s, Google or Yahoo!, the mouse, the VCR, the DVD, the CD, etc.? Other PC World bests include TiVo, Napster, the iPod, Adobe Photoshop 3.0, Doom, Game Boy, the NES, Atari VCS/2600, The Print Shop… And number one: Netscape Navigator. Yeah, this could go on all day…

The Game Boy entry is messed up.

Game Boy Monochrome
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Advance SP
Game Boy Micro

Thats six entries.

Nintendo DS
Nintendo DS Lite

Thats eight entries.

"Through a whopping nine versions"

9? Am I forgetting something?

"Now mutated into the Game Boy Advance,"

So...is there 6 versions ending with the GBA? Or did they include the DS and DS Lite which are, according to Nintendo, different franchises?

They're the same franchises, Nintendo is just BSing you. :D
