PlayStation Eye Drops This Summer

The evolution of the Eye Toy is hitting this summer for the PS3. PlayStation Eye was designed with both interactive gaming and online communication in mind. It will ship with EyeCreate editing software, allowing users to manipulate audio and video clips and store them on the PS3 hard drive. The editing suite allows users to edit the footage together and add various effects to the footage. Users can capture footage with the camera at different frame rates, such as time-lapse and slow motion.
"With the release of PLAYSTATION Eye we will be able to dramatically enhance the consumer's PS3 experience," said Richard Marks, research and development at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Beyond audio/video chat and the ability to save videos to your PS3 hard drive, PLAYSTATION Eye opens up a whole new world of entertainment options and adds a new dimensions to games across multiple genres."
The peripheral was created with the gamer in mind, functioning in low light environments and includes the ability to reduce audio background noise. The camera supports up to 120 frames a second, with a 56 degree field of view for closeups and 75 degrees for full body shots. The microphone supports multidirectional voice location tracking with advanced background noise suppression. So gamers will be able to chat without wearing a headset.
Besides online communication, the PlayStation Eye will give gamers the opportunity to create short films. It will take one dedicated individual to take their PS3 out of their living room to film something, but I imagine there will be one intrepid gamer who will lug his PS3 with PlayStation Eye attachment and a small monitor to the shoot. Will Sony allow users to trade their videos over the network, or even have a virtual theater in Home to showcase some of the talent? What would you do if you had a PlayStation Eye?

It may not be true HD, but it's pretty damn svelte.
I like the idea of not needing a headset mic, but I find with the 360 that it's easier to hear other players' voice from my headset rather than the TV. So unless Sony can do something about that too, I'd still want a headset.
Glad they're finally coming out with this puppy - hope it works as good as it looks!
It looks like something that's from the future but it's actually from the past. In fact, it looks a lot like a miniature SENSORAMA: http://www.retrofuture.com/sensorama.html
is that a camera with an electric shaver? what a silly combo
