PS3 Prices Continue Downward Spiral In The U.K.
The prices keep on falling in the U.K. for the PlayStation 3...so fast that even Smiley cannot keep up! Online U.K. retailer, Gameseek, has slashed the price of PlayStation 3 to £387.87. Other retailers such as Play.com, Gamestation, Shopto.com and WH Smith have also begun selling the console for under £400. Read on for the story:
“PS3 performed well pre-launch and the first week of release, but since then sales have dropped considerably,” said Gameseek boss Stephen Staley. “I am sure the deal will help matters. I personally believe the cuts are down to overstocking from launch. Credit goes to Sony for supplying for all of the demand, however this has left most retailers with alot of stock and with the consoles costing around £400 you can imagine, its not healthy for any business to have alot of PS3 consoles gathering dust in a warehouse.”Gameseek has even resorted to selling at a loss to boost PS3 demand. “We are obviously selling the console at a loss to try and attract new customers to our site. We are sure the PS3 is going to be big business for us over the next eight years so to get a good foothold in this market is essential,” added Staley.
Selling at loss? Damn! I wish retailers on this side of the pond would start doing that. I'd have a PS3 at my house in record time. So what do you think? Is anything to be made of this or are retailers simply clearing their overstocked PS3s? It does seem suspect, though, that Sony Europe has touted such incredible success for the PS3 in Europe overall, yet retailers are not able to get rid of what they already have....

Even at 389 GBP, thats what, almost 800 USD? Its STILL a rip-off.
I'm european but I got my 60GB PS3 from the US, when a relative living in Boston came here for a visit. Got it for 400 Euros (roughly 500 dollars). PS3 has enough techonlogy to justify a high price point (certainly when compared to the far inferior 360 Elite) - but the difference between Euro price, american price and, worse, HK and Jap price, is unjustifiable
Here's hoping price does drop officially for around 379 GBP

Everyone who wants one, have one. Everyone else is just waiting for the price to come down to a affordable level (less than 300 quid maybe?).
If it werent for region locked Blue-ray disc, some people would have brought a PS3 from HK for around 285 pounds! That's a 100 pounds cheaper than over here even with the price reduction.
I'd pay £425 for a console... if it had some games!
At the moment I wouldn't pay anywhere near what they are asking, the 360 I just bought is a bargain at £315 with a load of games. Good games. The ps3 doesn't even have one!
Make some good games, then they won't have to sell at a loss, the things will fly off the shelves.
As soon as this hits £220 or less, I'll be willing to shell out for it. Until then, Sony will just have to wait, maybe improve it a little in the meantime!
