PS3 Prices Tumbling In U.K., Official Price Drop In October?

U.K. website, The Register, is reporting that PS3 prices continue to fall since the launch of the system. Fitbabits, of Evil Avatar, makes note that the price drops are made by the retailer and are not mandated by Sony. Though Sony is rumored to be considering a $100 price drop in October of this year. Here's the meaty part of the article:
Retailers WH Smith and Play.com have both knocked £25 off the price of the PS3, offering the console for just under £400.But while the WH Smith offer was an Easter weekend-only deal that ended today, the Play.com offer will run for "the foreseeable future", a representative told Register Hardware and includes a free HDMI cable, free delivery and the movie Click on Blu-ray Disc.
The move comes as rumours began circulating that Sony is planning to kill off the 20GB version of the console. This has very little impact in the UK, since it wasn't available here anyway.
It was also claimed that Sony is planning to knock $100 off the cost of the PS3 by October. This would bring it into the same pricing territory as the forthcoming Xbox 360 Elite. The Elite will feature a 120GB hard drive, an HDMI port and cable, a wireless controller, an Xbox Live headset and a premium black finish. It's expected to begin arriving in stores in the US on 29 April.
Perhaps if Sony did the same thing in the U.S., people would be more apt to buy it and give the Elite 360 some better competition. ...but I think that we'd need some actual games to justify that purchase. Even at $499.99, it's still quite a purchase to make without anything to play on it. At least for now. What do you think? Do you believe that Sony would have greater success if they made this move, which hasn't happened yet, here in the U.S.?
