PS3 Tanking In UK
In only its second week in the UK, Sony's PS3 sales have dropped by a whopping 82%, says Chart Track, who gathered data from the 7,000 UK retail outlets that comprise 90% of the UK's software market. In its first week, the PS3 sold 165,000 units, which earned it the honor of being the fastest-selling home console in UK history. Which means this week's sales must have been a little under 30,000 - that's more than a dip, it's a wipe.
Sony declined to comment, but it's also worth noting that the top two PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, also saw a sales dip of 60%. Not selling consoles, not selling (or making) games... I still fundamentally believe the PS3 has excellent long-term potential, but the burden of proof lies with Sony. Further decimation of the PS3s install base is not a great start for the UK market - although I haven't seen sales figures for the rest of Europe, I'd be hard-pressed to imagine the UK bomb isn't indicative of some kind of regional trend.

82% is certainly a big drop, but I'm not sure where people expected the sales rate to go after a record launch... the only way to go was down.
If it drops 82% for 4 weeks straight, THAT'S a problem. Dropping 82% after a launch doesn't sound too surprising to me.
82% is still alot, even after a launch. Hell even after a record launch. ANd by how much of a record launch was it again?
Im sorry but the swiping at PS3 is getting really old..PS2 had exactly the same difficult birth and look what went on to happen with that 100 million plus seller. The fact is that the PS3 had a fantastic launch but a launch is just that- 30,000 consoles at £425 each on an average week is still good going. It is an expensive purchase and not everyone can afford it or wouldnt rather have 2 weeks holiday in spain instead! But at least they didnt artificially restrict numbers to bolster its image. The quality of PS3 is amazing and speaks for itself. Please stop trying to ruin the experience with all this FUD- stand up to it instead of following the negetivity that makes a lot of the net quite boring!

The PS3 fanboys would have you believe that the sales dip - yes, I'm being PC and calling it a "dip" - is simply a reflection of the fact that Sony are selling through the limited number of consoles still remaining on the shelves. The fact of the matter is that there's just nothing in or indeed OF the console at the moment that justifies it's monumental price.
Apparently WHSmith has already dropped the price by some 20 quid.
The PS3 is certainly not doomed, but what happens when the PS3, which was built to last 10 years, is superseded by consoles 4 or 5 years down the track?
There is certainly not a lot that Sony is doing right this generation. Let's not even talk about cannibalism.
This news is no wonder considering the price of the thing here in Europe.
The console itself costs 689€, which is about 923$. Buying just one game to go with it, the price plummets to about 754€, which in US dollars is 1010$.
You could get *seven* new PS2s with that price, now that they're on sale for 99€.
