PSP Core Price Reduction: $170

psp_price_drop_4-3-1b.jpg

Rumors have been percolating around the web for quite some time about reducing base price of the PSP. Well, the tea has been spilt. As of tomorrow, EBGames and Gamestop are lowering their collective price of the Core PSP system to $169.99. The system hovered at $199.99 for a long time. After the Value Pack was reduced to $199.99, it was only a matter of time before the Core system took a cut.

This could finally send a horde of people over to Sony’s handheld market. I have always seen the PSP as a luxury handheld. Too expensive to truly be portable, but too powerful to ignore. Now with the $30 savings on the console, the possibility of purchasing the system just went up considerably.

The question is it is even worth it yet? Even at a cheaper price, it's still a PSP. Also known as a handheld PS2 with PS2 games and a fragile system with games that are designed for a 30 inch screen while you sit on a couch...

Spoken like a person who never played with one.

It has a nice big library at this point. As for the "games that are designed for a 30 inch screen", I dont know what PSP games YOU are playing, but last time I checked, the games look mighty fine on that 16:9 screen.

It was worth it at 200, and its more than worth it at 169.

I am completely in agreement with Bob here. It's sooo worth it at this price, especially with the great library the PSP sports now and with titles like God of War that are just around the bend.

All your points, Mr. Hitman, seem very antiquated.

Wow, Sony FINALLY made a great business decision! They cut the price right when people are figuring out if they're getting a refund, which is more the case for the young adult set (a target audience of the PSP). I know that I'm certainly debating getting one after I get my refund...

The only problem is that still many of the games that appeal to me are just remakes. The system still places too much of an emphasis on PORTable.

Yeah, I wonder if Sony doesn't quite understand that portable didn't necessarily have to have a dual meaning.

Hitman is right, and talking about unreleased apps (gow in a years time) is as n00by as asking when Duke Nukem Forever will be on shop-shelves.

Too bad the $30 price drop doesn't even cover the price of a new game. I think this has come too little too late. The sweet spot would have been $150 or $140. Until they get closer to the DS price, people don't have much reason to pick up something with fewer, more expensive games. :/

There are games on this system I want to play: MGA, MGPO, Wipeout, Loco Roco. The problem is that many of the other games that I've wanted to play (original IPs) have since been brought over to the ps2 (Lumines, Tokobot, etc.). If publishers are slowly removing exclusivity of the games I want to play, and bringing them to a platform I already own, why should I pick up a psp?

Gotta agree with game-boi on this one, $150 is the hit price for me. I think the PSP is a beautiful looking machine, but there are no "must-have" games for me on this system.

I'm more interested in picking one up as a cheap alternative to an Archos. Now if only Sony would throw in a touch screen and a SD slot!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
