Welcome, Fearless Reader!

Northstar during his X-men days

Welcome to the new comics section at GayGamer.net! Boy of Tomorrow (hottie), Lazy Panda (girl hottie) and I will be posting stories, features and interviews about the comics world on a semi-weekly basis. Check back often, intrepid reader!

I wanted to commemorate this momentous occasion by paying tribute to the first openly gay mainstream comics character, Northstar. Created for Marvel by John Byrne in 1979, Northstar was always intended to be an openly gay character. Unfortunately the politics inside of Marvel at the time were such that this wasn't possible. According to Byrne, "it seemed like it was time for a gay superhero, and since I was being 'forced' to make Alpha Flight a real series, I might as well make one of them gay." Auspicious beginnings, to be sure. Northstar wasn't able come out until 1992. The event generated mainstream media attention, and the coming-out issue (Alpha Flight #106) quickly sold out. Due to the controversy, not much more was made of Northstar's sexuality until he joined the X-men in 2002.

Let's hear it for our poster boy for the comics section, Northstar. (Don't worry, girls, we'll have eyecandy for you next week) Full history of Northstar can be found on Wikipedia and on Marvel's website.

Good to know homosexuality is being accepted in the comic world. To tell the truth I've read a lot of Northstar's adventures but i never knew he be out of the closet. Was he out when he did his cameo in the animated X-Men series?

I wish John Byrne had the chance to do it himself because when they did it after he left the book it was awful :P Ptui!

I'm excited Gay gamer has finally branched off into the comics world. God knows we need more fanboys who like boys and vice versa.

Also, I suggest one of the first things that needs to be done is a concerted effort to lobby for the removal of Alan Heinburg from the Grey's Anatomy writing staff so he can write me some more goddamn Young Avengers with all its super gay boyfriends + human/robot love!

Actually The_French_Guy, no mention of his sexuality on the animated series (or of his sister either for that matter)

Oh sweet a comic section.. this is more up my ally and if you guys need help with content I could send stuff your way.

The best part or well saddest part about Northstar is that at one point they changed his orgin to where he actually came from a fairy realm.

That's right the gay guy who they couldn't say was gay became an honest to god fairy.

Luckily Marvel Retconned that.

Also should have mentioned how his Ultimate version is a lot lucker... he's getting to date the studly Collosus.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
