Capcom Press Day NYC: Devil May Cry 4

There were two things I was really looking forward to at this Capcom event, trying out Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (which our own Tiny Dancer will be filling you in on) and checking out Devil May Cry 4. Unfortunately we didn't actually get our hands on Dante, but watching the demo being played was good enough to hold me over to E3 where there will hopefully be a playable version.
We got some more info on our new hero, Nero, who has his own brand of kick ass in the form of his "devil bringer" arm and a sword equipped with a motorcycle throttle for a handle. The "devil bringer" arm is similar in concept to the demon arms in God Hand and The Darkness, a powerful arm imbued with super powers. In the case of DMC 4, however, these powers can be leveled up and new ones gained. Your arm can be used to swing from things as well as grabbing objects and enemies from far away and bringing them, front and center for the beating of a lifetime (or after lifetime as the case may be).
The sword is interesting in that you use the motorcycle throttle handle to power up the sword for extra strong attacks. With the charged up sword you get different moves than you do when it's in its normal state and it will stay charged up until you attack or get hit by an enemy. Of course, DMC is about the moves and as in previous games the longer combos you can string together the higher your attack rating goes up. As the gentlemen who demoed the game for us said, "DMC is all about getting bonuses for looking hot while taking out the bad guys." And look hot you do.

Nero is strikingly similar in appearance to the uber hot Dante from the previous games although it was stated that they are definitely not related. Never fear though, Dante does make an appearance later in the game as a playable character with all his powers in tact from the end of DMC 2. The two characters will meet up and apparently we will be told how two guy with no relation can look so darn similar.
The PS3 graphics looked terrific, especially during the boss battle with the giant flaming Berial. I can't really comment much on the controls as we didn't really use them, but we were treated to an improved camera that allows you a little more freedom with where you are looking at any given time. The gameplay definitely had the same DMC feeling with non-stop fighting action and some nice cutscenes. All in all, though, it seemed to provide a pretty similar experience as the previous three games.
That said however, I'll definitely be picking this one up when it hits the shelves. And when can we expect to see this on our consoles? The answer we got was pretty vague, stating that it would be "out soon." I asked if it would be out this year and with a laugh was told that it would be out in Capcom's 2007 "fiscal" year which runs from roughly April to March which tells me that we may not actually see DMC 4 until early 2008. But, from what I saw, it will definitely be worth the wait.
