Gamasutra & Game Developer Magazine Score Top Awards

webby.jpg

Two well-known gaming media sources owned by the CMP Game Group have been awarded the top honors in their respective fields: Gamasutra.com, a site for game developers that is renowned for its insider track to the latest news behind the scenes of the game world, has been honored with a Webby Award for Best Games-Related site of 2007, beating out competition such as GameSpot and GameDaily; meanwhile on the print side of things, Game Developer magazine scored the Best Computers/Trade Publication spot at the 56th Maggie Awards.

A Webby (pictured) is the "Oscar of the Internet," according to the New York Times, while a Maggie is, in case the semantic tip-off isn't clear enough, an even more prestigious award for both consumer and trade magazines of almost every stripe.

CMP, who owns both Gamasutra and Game Developer, is a "core provider of essential information to the professional game industry," which is maybe a bit of an understatement: in addition to its powerhouse publications, CMP's product line inlcudes GamesOnDeck.com, SeriousGamesSource.Com, GameCareerGuide.com, no less prestigious an affair than the Games Developers Conference, the GDC Austin, GDC China, GDC Mobile, the Serious Games Summit, the Hollywood and Games Summit, the Game Career Seminars, the Independent Games Festival and Summit and the Game Developers Choice Awards. Yikes!

Congrats on more than a few jobs-well-done to CMP, and don't stop with the gamey goodness, please! Make the jump for the full release.

Gamasutra.com Tops List of Video Game Consumer and Trade Websites for International Honor; Game Developer Named Best Computers/Trade Publication

SAN FRANCISCO – May 15, 2007 – The CMP Game Group is proud to announce that two of its hallmark brands received high honors recently. The Webby Awards, the leading international honor for websites, has named Gamasutra.com, the CMP Game Group’s site for game developers, as the Best Games-Related site of 2007. Other nominees in the category included CNET Networks' GameSpot, AOL's GameDaily, and LucasArts' official websites for the games LEGO Star Wars II and Thrillville. The Maggie Awards, the most prestigious magazine publishing awards in the western United States, has awarded Game Developer magazine the Best Computer/Trade Publication of 2006. Other finalists in the category included Network Computing, Redmond Channel Partner, RTC Magazine, and Technology & Learning.

"The CMP Game Group is passionate about providing valuable, inspirational and actionable information about game development to the entire game industry," noted Simon Carless, Publisher and Editorial Director for Gamasutra.com and Game Developer. "These awards solidify our position as the definitive editorial outlets – both online and in print – for video game professionals wanting to master the art, business, and science of making games."

Gamasutra.com is an internationally recognized online community with more than 370,000 registered members. The leading game development site since 1997, Gamasutra.com provides features, industry news, product news, job listings, comprehensive resume and contractor databases, and a directory of schools and training programs relevant to game developers. In essence, Gamasutra addresses everything game developers need to improve their skills, interact with other developers, learn about products, find work and locate services in their areas.

The site will be honored at The 11th Annual Webby Awards on June 5, which will be hosted by comedian Rob Corddry (The Winner, The Daily Show) and will feature the Webbys' famous five-word speeches. (Al Gore's 2005 speech was, "Please don't recount this vote.") Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by The New York Times, The Webby Awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-person judging academy whose members include Vinton Cerf, R/GA's Chief Bob Greenberg, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Arianna Huffington, and Harvey Weinstein.

"The Webby winners and special achievement honorees represent the very best in online creativity and innovation," said Webby Awards executive director David-Michel Davies. "We're proud to salute the people and organizations whose ideas and vision are transforming how we experience the world."

Game Developer, the print publication written specifically for creators of entertainment software, provides technical and industry information to more than 35,000 professional game developers. Each month, industry leaders and game development experts share technical solutions, review new products, and discuss strategies for creating innovative, successful games. Professional game creators count on Game Developer for the most relevant and respected content in the game industry.

Game Developer was honored as the Best Computers/Trade publication at the 56th Maggie Awards banquet, which was held April 27 in Los Angeles. The awards encompass both consumer and trade magazines and span categories from political issues to alternative lifestyles. The Maggies, organized by the Western Publications Association, received more than 2,000 entries representing 400 magazines. For the past 55 years, the Maggie Awards have recognized the hard work, dedication and creative talents in the publishing industry today.
