GameTap: Out Of The Playground And Onto The Highway

GameTap has come a long way since they opened their virtual doors in 2005. What was once seen a retro gaming enthusiast’s playground, is now a highway for current mainstream titles. They are taking huge leaps in programming for their broadband entertainment distribution. Now they are offering a digital retail storefront to purchase titles and download them for subscription customers.
In conjunction with the storefront, they are offering a day-and-date subscription play where paying subscribers can play current titles, or purchase them the day they hit brick and mortar store shelves. The first on the list for the new retail model is none other than the leading lady of gaming, Ms. Lara Croft starring in her latest adventure, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
“This is the first new deal with a major game publisher (Eidos) that will enable GameTap to feature the hottest games of today and tomorrow for subscription play in the same windows as traditional retail outlets,” said Stuart Snyder, GameTap’s senior vice president and general manager.
In an effort to capture more of the mainstream audience, Gametap will be offering an advertising-supported section on their website that will host a variety of games for free. Users will be able to go to GameTap.com and play some games without a subscription to the main service. Debuting at the end of the month, there will be more than 30 free games available on the website, which include: Metal Slug, Bust-A-Move, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend, Joust, Robotron: 2084 and Rampage.
