Hands-On With 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit

Engadget has a hands-on with the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit and I must say, just looking at this picture makes me queasy; I feel like my grandmother when she looked at my first PC, about to exclaim 'I'm afraid to touch it!' Thankfully, I've never uttered those words in my life...
...Anyway. While the stand-alone 120GB Hard Drive definitely does come with a data transfer kit, there's still some confusion about whether the same is true for the Elite system itself - most sources point to "No," and this bossy-looking Xbox 360 Data Migration Kit Order Form seems to support that notion. Also in support of the "Upgrade your damn self, Jerkwad" theory is Microsoft's instruction within the kit itself to dispose of the transfer cable after use. Either the cable itself only works once or Microsoft is being extra bossy...either way: make me. I dare you.
Engadget reports ample-to-hefty documentation as well as a data CD - either way you look at it, MS seems to be going the extra mile to make sure the process works right the first time, which is not a bad attitude, aside from having the gall to tell me what to do with my cable. Especially since you only get to transfer content once (per drive, I'm guessing). The instructions direct one to use the rear USB port, although the Engadgeteers followed the contradictory on-screen diagram and used the front port successfully. The old drive fits into the 360, the new chubby one is connected externally via the magic secret cable.
Downloaded games and media will require online authorization for some content, which we knew, and rented movies won't transfer at all - and a nearly-full 20GB HDD estimated total transfer time at 1hr 20min. The actual transfer time clocked in at under an hour.
You can stop the process and start over again (should you panic...don't panic...) without losing data, but at the same time "Microsoft is not liable for any loss of data." So know what you're getting yourself into. Good luck, y'all!
