Nintendo Power Must Die, Long Live Nintendo Power
I recently reported about the confirmed move of over half of Nintendo's employees to San Francisco and New York. A large portion of this division, is the long lasting Nintendo produced magazine, Nintendo Power. Rumors were flying, and many people believed that the fate of the periodical was grim, especially in a market that seems to increasingly (*ahem*) turn to free online sources for their news rather than costly subscription based magazines.
But never fear! One of the first ever US videogame based magazines, which started in 1988, will be continuing on. Although, according to that irrepressible VP of Corporate Affairs, Perrin Kaplan, the magazine will become a "licensed property" fundamentally owned by Nintendo. This means that while a whole new group of people could be designing, writing, and running the magazine, the big N will still own the rights and proceeds that go with the name. No word yet on who those people might be.
Perhaps this is a much needed kick in the pants, because while I had my three free issues of NP courtesy of Nintendo.com for registering three or more products, the magazine did indeed have a very dated feel, not to say that it wasn't trying. It will be interesting to see how things develop. Maybe Nester will start a "Hot or Not" portion where he makes fun of video game characters' shoes. Yeah, that's what we need.

Oh GOD, I still have that issue somewhere.
Nintendo Power is probably close to being the longest-running video game magazine ever, but many others (like Electronic Games, JoyStik, C&VG, Vidiot, Atari Age, Video Games Magazine, VG Illustrated.... and those are just some of the ones I bought) predated it by many years. They just all died off following the crash, and NP was one of the first of the second wave, not one of the first overall.
