Play Fallout 3...Today!
Stop what you're doing, make sure you're sitting down, and read: thanks to the efforts of Fallout fansite No Mutants Allowed, you may now download and play the original Black Isle Studios version of Fallout 3, codenamed Van Buren. Or at least, as much of it as ever got made: welcome to the original technical demo once created to woo publishers, which is more or less the half-constructed Death Star of the erstwhile project. No, this isn't a pile of Tiny's Patented Bullshit. No, your worst enemy isn't paying me to see how quickly you can have a heart attack.
You can play Fallout 3. And you can play it today. For free.
Of course, there are caveats: the game was never completed, so that's your first warning to temper years of hoping and wishing and mourning for this game. It's described as being "pre-alpha," doesn't have full functionality, may crash frequently and lacks finalized combat. It also bears no relation whatsoever, as far as we know, to the Fallout 3 in development over at Bethesda. This Death Star is not fully operational.
That said, this is as close as you'll ever get to playing Black Isle Studios' original vision of Fallout 3, and it's a damn sight closer than I ever expected. I'm still cued up to download the blessed, blessed thing, but stay tuned for as full a report as I can muster.
How's that for news?
