Square-Enix Prez Doles Out Some Info
In it's annual investor's conference in Tokyo today, Square-Enix president Youichi Wada dropped some mildly juicy info, although none of it really comes as a shock. The main purpose of the conference was this: don't worry about the RPG beast, because they reported an 11.7 billion yen (for those that don't want to figure it out, that's $96.32 million USD) net profit. While that staggeringly high number is actually down 32 percent from last year, sales are apparently up by the same percentage. Don't ask me how that makes sense financially. I can't even balance my checkbook.
Interestingly enough, this is the first fiscal year, according to Wada, that the company's sales were greater outside of Japan. 16.93 million copies of their games were sold, with only 7.21 million of those taking place in their home country. Wada claimed that this was due to distributing the games themselves, rather than through third party outsiders.
As for the interesting stuff, the games, the company reported that it's online division is pretty much relying on Final Fantasy XI, but that they are planning a few big online titles to hit in 2008 and '09. They should probably get on that a little quicker, because I would think that FFXI is starting to get a little dated at this point. On the company's most anticipated titles Wada said that while Dragon Quest IX is developing smoothly and better than planned, the PS3 behemoth Final Fantasy XIII will definitely not hit stores during this upcoming fiscal year. That means after March of '08. Yikes.
Look on the bright side, that's one less reason to run out and buy a PS3!

Honestly, who didn't see the FFXIII delay coming? Sony's announcement that FFXIII would hit by the end of 2007 came less than a month after Square-Enix said in interviews that White Engine was only less than 5% complete.
