Square's Latest Original RPG: The Last Remnant

Square-Enix is hard at work on a new IP, The Last Remnant. Finally some fresh blood in the mix, instead of a rehash or a sidequest sidestory of a previous long-running franchise. The latest RPG will be a single player game directed by Hiroshi Takai, who was the game planner for the PS2 launch title, Bouncer.
The June issue of Game Informer will have more details about The Last Remnant when it hits newsstands. What we know now is the game will have two characters to choose from, which will appeal to both sides of the Pacific. Rush has been groomed as a traditional Square-Enix hero, while The Conqueror is a dark character that will appeal to Western gamers. The combat will be turn-based with an action element. I imagine it will use quick timed events similar to Paper Mario, or maybe even Shadow Hearts with timed button presses during combat.
Also, now we know what Square-Enix has been doing with the Unreal 3 engine. The company is taking a vested interest in their western audience now, “From the conceptual stage of this project, we kept a global market in mind, placing a special emphasis on the North American market”, said Takai in the Game Informer interview. So check out the magazine when it hits stands for the full story.

If they are using the Unreal 3 engine, does that mean Xbox 360 game? If it were a PS3 game, they could just use the White engine they are so proud of.
Tigershard::
The White Engine is open-platform, which is why the exclusivity of FFXIII is up ihe air. Games developed with it can be released on either the 360, the PS3, and theoretically a PC.
Square has opted to use the Unreal 3 engine simply because it eliminates the time, energy, and money required to develop one's own engine. By using the Unreal 3 engine, Square significantly streamlines their development process.
