Umbrella Chronicles Nearly Controlled Like RE4

umbrellachronicle.jpg

When Capcom decided to make Umbrella Chronicles, they almost had the game control like their previous smash hit Resident Evil 4. When Capcom evaluated the strengths of the system, they decided to make the game an on-rail shooter to appeal to Nintendo’s core audience.

Masachika Kawata, the producer of the title, claimed that the decision to change the controls hinged on what he though Wii owners would want. Standard RE4 controls would have been:

“too complicated to enjoy. Wii users like easiness. Umbrella Chronicles is not only for game enthusiasts. Complex operability can be an obstacle for Wii users. We want players to enjoy the game's horrifying and creepy world and its thrilling shooting action. By reducing enthusiast-only elements, players can purely enjoy the world."

So this sounds like this new entry in Resident Evil series was targeted for casual gamers. What does that mean, really? Does it mean that depth, and the tightest controls ever seen in the history of the series had to be scrapped and simplified to appeal to a casual market?

Let’s hope not. Sure, the game will probably sell well. The one thing that Capcom has always excelled in with Resident Evil is the ability to scare the pants off of you. The game should be quite a ride, but I’m broken that they ditched that tight control system. It really breathed new air into the series, and made the game control more like a shooter. The action was intense and the journey was terrifying.

How do you feel about this change? Do you think Capcom was thinking of sheer numbers and how many more copies they could sell with a less complicated control scheme, or are they trying to change the way we look at the world of Resident Evil?

I think that this is an experiment for Capcom. I imagine that this entry will be one of but few, if not the only one of its kind. Personally, I don't have a problem with it, primarily BECAUSE I don't think this is the direction the series will go. As I understand, UC is a re-visit of all the older games, and as such would be a good way to quickly catch up on the storyline. Ultimately, it all boils down to story control. If they botch it (which, for an on-rails shooter, I imagine is quite difficult to do as far as controls go), it will fail. Otherwise, it will do rather well.

Honestly, fuck 'em. This was obviously dictated by the marketing department - there's no way in hell it would make for a better game.

"Wii users like easiness."

Um, that's insulting... I don't really know how to feel good about someone making a statement like that. Like, a non-shooting gallery type game would be too hard? I find that very hard to believe.

I'm not getting this game.

I think that it is a good move for Capcom to change the control scheme. It's simplicity appeals to new gamers, making it easier for them to enjoy the game. I think Umbrella Chronicles is geared to new gamers /new fans of the series, as it summarizes previous RE games. It's kinda like The New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, the game is dumbed down for the new generation of gamers.

As well, it isn't like they aren't developing RE5 for those who are already familiar with the series.

I'm afraid that this sums up everything I feel about the nintendo wii. It is a game console for NON-GAMERS! It is a children's toy/party fad/ dust-gatherer, not a next gen console. In my opinion the wii resident evil spin-offs will be the worst thing since the PS2 light gun spin-offs. Total cash-in garbage that cheapens the real series (I want RE5!). wii users cant cope with proper controllers-"too complicated"..they like "easiness" This is the first console that I have no interest in purchasing. It has as much in common with the true next-gen consoles as a vacuum cleaner or a toaster. It is the worst thing to happen to the games industry since it began. A console for "non gamers" a console and games aimed at "non game enthusiasts" what does that tell you?.Who the hell is buying these graphically impoverished abominations????? Michael Jackson cant be buying all of them . He is the only over-7yr old that I can picture buying one to play with his friends.

and Nintendo is laughing it all up taking that money all the way into their bank account.

God bless their smug little hearts!- its amazing what crap some people will buy..Lets face it they certainly don't cost much to manufacture! . Demand will dry up soon when the pre-schoolers find a new craze

Aaaaaannnd the insubstantial complaints begin.

Someone & Morrigan - kinda rushing the judgment, don't you think? You can't really compare it to the original since it's the same story being set in an entirely different gameplay genre. It'd be like complaining about the first two Paper Mario games or Mario RPG because they deviated from the platformer genre.

waterfiend - I'm with you on that bit. That was a bit insulting for them to say.

Mark - bravo! You get it!

sigmagoat & starbuck - just....no. You're literally one "M$" or "Gay-station" away from being a foaming at the mouth fanboy. Just stop.

I have nothing against dificult controls, but I didn't care for RE4's controls and general gameplay system. So really, I don't mind that this one will differ from it.
Frankly I though the classic survival horror control scheme was good. I don't know why the whole over-the-shoulder nonsense was needed.

Tavares (Beat GG) said:

well the control scheme they came up with for the re4 port is terrible, i mean seriously, i have to wiggle my wii-mote to make him run? what was wrong with the push A button controls? to complicated i guess. why not, oh i don't know, an arm pumping motion similar to jogging? but really a rail system has to be the worst idea since Resident Evil Gun Survivor 1 and 2. pooh on you capcom, stop being so lazy, if you just want to focus on RE5, just say so.
ps. i don't think the average person who picked up the Wii for games like wiisports and wiiplay, you know, the casual ones, will even be remotely interested in the a survival horror title. i can't see the seniors down at the home blasting zombies, and kids probably shouldn't play it if it were rated T for teen anyway. then again, i could be wrong.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
